Hey all

my new TB has a bald bottom with flaky skin, when i asked the seller he said it was a fungal infection & that his rugs needed cleaning & had rubbed him - i didnt take his rugs & bought new ones but it seems to have gone sore again - i popped some sudacrem on it tonight, but wonder if anyone has any advice on what this might be? either side of his bottom are bald patches, he generally appears quite dusty & scurfey skin wise, his coat is very long at the moment & dull but should perk up with his supplements & correct feed??:)

Has your horse been wormed lately? May be something to do with it if not. May be worth asking your vet to do a worm count anyway.

it could be a number of things. i would have to agree and get a worm count done. it could also be sweet itch, could be sarcoptic mange, it could be something else. i would get vet to investigate properly xxx

yep, check for worms, they lay the eggs outside of the body at night and the sticky stuff they use to lay the eggs itches so the horse rubs its bottom and tail on anything it can find, hence the bald patches.
Also, if the horse has had a fungal infection it could be ringworm? especially if they said his rugs needed cleaning.....! Ringworm isnt always perfect 'rings'!

whatever it turns out to be, once treated and fed properly etc his coat should come good.

Hi, my horse loves having his bum itched, as in either side of his actually bum :o. He turns round and backs up to me to have it itched. He rubs it too and although not bald, he has rubbed either side of his bum. He also has a bit of a scurfy, greasy coat. He does however have mild allergies to a number of remote things, he was blood tested for allergies due to his itchiness and at this time of year he does begin to rub his hocks too??? He was also skin scraped for mites, came back clear, hes worm free and doesnt have any fungal infection.

If you think it may be fungal then wash him all over with Nizeral - dilute with hand hot water and lather up well working well into the coat to the skin. It's a human anti dandruff shampoo that contains Ketaconisol. You can buy it at a chemists. You can either leave it in or rinse out after 10 mins. If it is ringworm it will also kill it off.

When you wash his rugs add some Canestan 'In Wash' rinse to the water to kill off any fungus in the rug.

Might ba parasite issue

But remember also that possible laminitics who are challenged are often quite itchy and it can show in the skin first.

When our little chap gets itchy (he rubs his bottom raw) we know he has been challenged.
