Hi guys, just visiting my mums ATM and we got talking last night about her lab - Finley, who is bald and i said i'd ask the lovely H&H'ers about it..

Basically, he only has one of the two coats, he's completely bare underneath, backs of legs, under side of his jaw and all around his bottom..

They have spent around £2.5k with the vets finding out what is wrong with him, and nothing has come from it, the poor dogs had skin tests, blood tests, everything you name it!

Has anyone had this before? or can anyone suggest a supplement or something he can go on? I believe he has oil in his food morning/night, he's got great teeth, perfect weight, bright eyes but his coat is just awful! He loves to swim and obviously when ever he swims he gets freezing - so they have to dry him off straight away and then "rug" him up in his joules fleece rug. :o

any idea's/thoughts welcomed

Sounds like the way my dog used to be. He is allergic to tree pollen (we live in the middle of a forest :o) and the bacteria on his own skin and intolerant of high levels of protein in his diet and cereals.

He has Wainwrights senior salmon and potato (19% protein), 4 x Piriton a day and at least one Malaseb bath a week. We did not do any of the tests, we just used trial and error and elimination.
A day or two on the wrong type of food or a day off the antihistamines and he can start scratching again.

Have they tried eliminating EVERYTHING? It can be caused by carpet, household products (especially anything containing pine) certain materials.

Hope you get to the bottom of it, it is miserable.

Thanks for your reply CC, i don't think he's scratching, i just don't think it grows?

I believe he is on a wheat free diet, they have tried many different foods but the hair just doesn't grow. He was really good for a while (sometime last year) but then went bald again.. It really is bizaare.

When she gets home tonight, i shall show her your post:D thanks

Regarding the food -do they restrict access to treats. I had a westie in for a similar problem. After two weeks here on a chicken, lamb rabbit potato & carrot diet he was growing hair.
Sent him home with food & instructions. A week later he was bald again -they were giving the food I'd frozen in portions for him but were also giving biscuits!

One of my dogs has severe allergies, but mine scratches constantly. Our only option is to move out of our house(but that's not very possible right now). My dog is fed prescription food from the vet, and currently is on steroids to help with the itch. Also have to bathe her twice a week with special shampoo. Nothing is helping my baby though. My dog looks so bad now(missing hair) people sometimes stop me on walks thinking I don't care for my dog. But for the last year I've taken her to the vet every week for an allergy injection. Nothing helps. So I know how that is. Its very stressful. Hope you find a solution to the dogs problem.

They don't feed him biscuit as in "treat" biscuits.. because he gets awful wind from them and stinks the house out.. however he does have raw hides chews.. but i think (will check later) they stopped those completely to see if it worked and it didn't.

Chrissy4221- Yes, he doesn't itch at all, it just doesn't even grow! It's so weird, i've only ever seen him... 4 times and it's gradually gotten worse each time.. I hope you find the answer for yours too:o
