The big cob always has a bit of mane missing at the start third of his neck, but this year he seems to have gone mad rubbing it out and its now nearly half bald!!

He is also rubbing his tail and seems very itchy around the wither. I have bathed him yesterday with insecticidel shampoo but he is still itching today.

What do you think, maybe sweet itch? Or could it be the fast fibre he has as heard this can make them itch? Or just time of year with moulting etc?

For other info, have tried mane builder, no help. He is a head shaker. He is kept in breezy land not near water.

Any advice? :-)

Hi,

The same thing has happened to my loan horse this week. He has no history of sweet itch at his previous yard, but I highly suspect it is.
I have applied sudocream, and am using Coopers Fly Repellant and a fly rug. I think the irritation started one day last week when he was out naked.
However, after only a few days it looks much better, not sore, and he's not itching anymore.
Good luck

Maybe try some wonder gel by gold label, Your horse sounds exactly the same as one I exercise for someone this is what gets put on him daily (it's nice and cheep) and he's actually got mane and you wouldn't know he used to have half a bald mane.
