Bald patches on face (photos) what's the cause? :S

does he sweat? I had a horse who lost hair where yours does but only in the summer. I found that if I washed his face after he was ridden the hair grew back and he stopped losing it. Just an idea!
 
My horse had something that looked exactly like this a year ago, it got worse and the vet came out, tested for ringworm (negative) and gave me some sort of cream, can't remember what - had silver in it.......

It cleared up pretty much by itself and this year he has had the same thing again, although it hasn't got as bad as it did last year and I am just going to leave it as he isn't bothered by it.

I think it may be some sort of seasonal allergy

(if I remember the name of the cream I will let you know but I don't think it made much difference)
 
Looks like rubbing to me. Does your horse wear a muzzle? Just wondered if it could be from that. Could be an allergy to something when grazing or even flies. I would bathe with lukewarm salt water and if it progresses, ring your Vet. Wonder if its Fuciderm cream the other poster is trying to think of.
 
thanks will put salt water on. Buttercups is only thing I can think of in field. No diet change other than he is currently on danilon :S
 
One of ours always rubs his face and nose every summer, vets told us it was a buttercup allergy, but he's since been in yards with no buttercups and he still gets it. Guess its just a summer allergy. We find wiping it with a sponge and tea tree every day helps a lot, especially when its been bleeding as it repels the flies. Also had some fly gel once that he was allergic to- had the same effect.
 
At work the horses get VERY sweaty and this is how they go if the sweat/grease isn't quite washed off properly. Is he in hard work? (mine never do enough to need washing properly!)
I work at 2 yards. One we wash horses with a bucket and sponge and they get faces like your photo sometimes.
Yard 2 we wash faces with a hose til the water runs clear and no horse gets patches.
Could it be this?

He is slightly lame so sat in field atm (dw vet is treating)
He sweated a bit with thunder other day bolting round? maybe need a good wash !
