Hi, i am after some advice. I bought an unhandled filly 3 months ago and during the bad weather managed to put a rug on her (stable) and left this on permenantly as found it difficult to take it on and off as she was very nervous. Anyhow today i decided to take it off her as it had been getting warmer and when i did i found several patches of hair missing, two showing raw flesh. I managed to touch the area and it did not seem to cause her any discomfort but did look nasty. Does any one have any advise what this is, do you think it may be due to sweating and skin not being able to breath properly with rug being left on or something more serious like mites?? I am really embarressed by this and really want to sort her out as she seems to be more approachable at present and know it is totally my fault for just leaving rug on. Any help and advise would be great. thanks xxx

I would sugest it could be just because the rug has been left on. foals in particular, like human babies have quite sensitive skin and can be prone to bacterial skin conditions and such like... I'd try gently cleaning it with some dilute hibbiscrub or salt water...

Thank you, she is a chesnut tb and is 19mths. they are on the top of her back about 6 inches from tail. It does look like it maybe where she had bit herself trying to itch. I have left her rug off now. the only reason i left it on was she was very underweight when i got her so wanted to help her keep the weight on and keep warm with the heavy snow.

Will clense it tomorrow and see how things go, oh and she is kept in the stable at present.

Thanks again. Lauren x

leave her naked! she willpuff her coat up to keep warm. ad lib hay or haylage creates heat as digested in the hind gut! as to her weight make sure she is properly wormed (get a worm count done to check) and feed a small quality feed twice a day, but dont force grow her (not good for the joints etc) lots of turnout to help strenghthen joints and bones and also helps with manners as they stay more level headed. keep handling, brushing doing feet daily, and put rug on and take it off as an exercise!
