My mare had a tiny weeny little scratch on one of her sides mid winter and I didn't even notice it until she kept chewing at it and now she has a bald patch the size of a 10 pence piece on her side and a big area of chewed hair. I thought the scratch was the initial cause of this self mutilation but she has been doing the same on the other side too.
Now my other thought was it was my legs rubbing the hair away but it is further back than this and this has never happened before on her.
I have been hibi scrubbing it and applying aloe vera gel for the last week or two which seems to have stopped the itching but is there anything I can put on in it encourage the hair to grow back but is safe for her to ingest in case she chews at it again? Also any ideas on why she has started this self mutilation?
