Any ideas what this is? Not sore or itchy. No discharge/oozing. A little dry/flakey. Both hind outside toes are affected but this one much more so. No grass seed etc to be seen. Skin scraping shows nothing sinister. Dog completely unbothered by it. If he wasn't mine I'd swear he was chewing it but I've never seen him do it and he lives in so I'd imagine I'd cath him in the act.

Vets only suggestion is a course of steroids.

The nail bed looks red /inflamed and there is a definite lump above it...
After tests from The vet and you are sure there is nothing embedded,I would salt soak the foot, and try a cream such as gentalyn beta.plus(which contains a steroid) to see if you get an improvement.

If this fails,I would get a biopsy done on that lump....how odd it is on both feet!

There's no lump, I'll try to get a better pic later. A lump would have suggested histiocytoma which the vet has ruled out. Definitely nothing embedded we've done a thorough exam at the vets. He's as stumped as I am here suggesting the steroid course.
