Someone gave me a tip of using baler twine to cut baler twine (by 'sawing' with it) when you havent got scissors / knife to hand.

If anyone else does this can i just offer a word of caution:

Don't.

I ended up with smoking baler twine last night. Seems the friction had made it a bit too hot

Off to find my pen knife....

oh dear. I can do it without setting my hay on fire, my friend (jumpthemoon) taught me how to do it and I have to say it's a very handy thing to know how to do!

Never mind Katy, you may not be able to open your hay, but you can make fire!!!

You have to make sure you stay in the same place on the bit you are cutting. Keep plenty of length to the sawing bit so you can take long 'saws' and use quite a firm pressure - that should cut through it quickly so you don't burn the barn down

.....or stick to your knife

Never had any probs doing this but only use a knife know as i have the big bales with HUGE bale twine! Think i'd be there all day if i tried it with that! Actually found a place for my knife after all these years so as long as no one moves it it is always there!

We used to do this at the riding stables as we were not allowed a knife (kids) But you were told only use a piece once (it weekens it) and after you have broken throught all string including the stuff you just brroke had to go in the metal bin to the outside. So if it did smolder it was not in the hay barn and it was noticed. Cant remember any burning though, although it can get quite hot
