Ban dogs at badminton?

Just watching the cross country on TV and seen a bloody dog chase Mary King and almost cause a accident never mind a stop. While I would suggest shooting both dog and owner how about a ban as spectators just don't seem to be able to control their dogs. The same happened last year. It's a shame that a few bad apples ruin it for all but it's just not fair on the competitors IMO.

It happens every year, and as 99% of the specatators must have some horse knowledge, how totally irresponsible of them to let a dog get loose.
Sorry, I'd ban them from the event, that border terrier had a wire extending lead trailing, can you imagine if a horse got caught in that at speed?
The wire would cut like a knife and possible bring down the horse, so the risk isn't worth it.
I'd arrange for portable kennels with a reasonable charge and insist dogs were in there or at home...
 
Yep, totally agree with this. Its ridiculous - TWICE a dog went loose and chased. I dont care less if people claim they are "responsible" owners, Im sure those responsible for those 2 little mutts said the same!
 
I was going to post the self same thread.

After seeing Mary being chased plus at least two others who were spooked at fences by barking and lunging dogs I think YES absolutely dogs should be banned. There will come a point where a horse or rider will be seriously injured or worse because of this or someone will take action against a dog owner because their qualification or placing was lost.
 
One of the fences had some of the hunt kennel hounds in a pen nearby, and about 3 of them managed to escape at one point by jumping over. One that got onto the course started chasing the horse, obviously thinking he was out hunting! I can see why they have the hounds at Badminton to raise support, but surely it wasn't really thought through if they were able to jump over the pen so close to the course. It would be a shame if they had to completely ban dogs, but there are an awful lot who yap, have idiotic owners, or seem unused to horses.
 
Agreed - i only said to my friend to day 'how can someone at a horse event not have an eye on their dog??' It makes me mad - really, if you have it on a decent lead and a collar that ruddy fit the thing it shouldn't get loose!!

You know what else p!sses me off.............when dog owners have their dogs on leads that are TOO LONG!!!!

Completely agree . We watched some idiot let their dog swim in the lake whilst they took pics of it being cute

. They were other side from us so I could not say anything. Also very hard to shop whilst avoiding dog poop and being tripped up by leads.

I've been to Badminton with and without dogs, and much prefer not taking them - it's not much fun for ours, who don't do much lead work - probably only go on the lead two or three times a year.

If you have no one at home to take care of your dogs whilst you are away for a long day, you have to take them with you, and make the best of it. When we took them a few years ago, late in the afternoon we stuck them back in the Freelander for a couple of hours, knowing that they would settle right down and sleep. The problem with that can be that someone would call the RSPCA and before you know it you've had the car window broken and are officially a bad owner! (I need to add here that it was cloudy and cool, and we left windows and sun roof ajar).

Regards extendable leads - hate them, and if any of our dogs ever chased a horse it was made very clear to them that it wasn't acceptable, and that they would be most unwise to EVER consider it again!
 
Trying to watch a horse show, Bratlee and Bratlina howling like monkeys on crack. Kids underfoot, yowling for food/drink/a programme/they're bored and noisy and after paying higher and higher rates, don't want to put up with these spoiled future thugs.

Dogs, leave em' at home...or should we start bringing our horses to dog shows to add "interest"? Bet they'd have kittens if we did.

I just find it amazing, how absolutely selfish these people are, with their dogs or kids...not caring how their charges will impact everyone else in the world.
 
I have two JRT's <6months old. They spent the day with us and behaved impeccably. They didn't get under ANYONES feet and the two poos they did were cleaned up.
Please tell me why the hell I should be penalised for the mistakes of others?

Just ban the people themselves not everyone. Its a real joy seeing dogs @ Badders, long may it continue!
 
Agree - some behaved impecably and were no problem at all, it was ones who were barking at horses going past, lunging at them or starting fights who really p**sed me off

Because its not "a joy to see dogs at Badminton" to many people who purchase tickets. They are paying to go and enjoy spectating at a fair and challenging horse competition - if they wanted to see dogs they'd go to CRUFTS. Your dogs bring great enjoyment to you - wonderful. At a crowded horse show, to everyone else, even if they are well behaved, they are just an unnecessary risk and tbh a bit of a pain in the a**e. I've nothing against dogs but Badminton is not about them and is not a sensible place for them.
 
I don't know why any dog owners think an extendable lead is a good idea at Badminton. The whole point of having a dog on a lead is to keep them under control and away from the horses and other dogs. You're not taking them there so they can run around but still be on a lead.
There were so many yappy dogs there yesterday barking everytime a horse came by (and not just magnified because of a microphone close by) plus the usual piles of dog s**t to try to avoid as you were walking round

i agree!! no dogs, there is also a doggy creche so why people feel the need to drag them through crowds of people, ect is beyond me , i would never risk it esp as you cant be sure they arent gonna escape and chase someone!!!!!

I agree 100%. I can't abide dogs at the best of times, but in a crowded place like Badminton they're a menace. At Burghley last year I lost count of the amount of fights between dogs and small dogs being trodden on I saw. I think lots of people take their dogs along as a posing accessory and don't give the dog's welfare a second thought.

I mean no disrespect to any responsible dog owner - I know there are many of them!

Thats a totally spoilt and selfish reason to want dogs banned but then again, why does that not surprise me?

Didn't hear anyone complaining when it was Zara's dogs that got loose and chased a horse at a one day.

Dogs shouldn't get loose, end of. But I agree, there were so many irresponsible owners there yesterday and perhaps the time is right to ban them, but not because it affects you, people annoyed me more than any dogs did - stopping in the middle of the walk ways, pushing, shoving and being generally rude - because of welfare for the dogs and the horses and competitors.

I do too.

Sadly it is the few idiots who can't control their dogs who ruin it for all the other responsible dog owners who do take their dogs to events like that.

We leave our dogs at home because if one of them did get loose they would chase the horses, no doubt about it.
 
ERM if seeing dogs pains you that badly don't go to Badminton - you all KNOW they are going to be there.

Quite frankly HOW anyone can say the prescence of my dogs affected them I don't know - they didn't get in anyone's way, they weren't trodden on, they didn't so much as utter a whine all day and when it was busy I picked them up to keep them out of people's way.

Would anyone like to shed any light because as far as I see it, yet again, it comes down to good/bad owners NOT dogs per se....
 
The trouble is as always it's the irresponsible owners who give all of us dog owners a bad name.
Why when the dogs in the quarry kept continually barking didn't the entire rest of the crowd turn round and tell the owners they were being an unfair distraction?
It is not on to have a yapping dog lunge at the horse's or other dogs, and for that reason I would still say ban them all. Provide hundreds of kennels so you can bring your dogs if you wish and insist any dog that misbehaves just once either by barking or fighting when out of the doggy area is removed from the place forthwith.
Why should the people who leave their dogs at home have to tread in dog sh**?
I have learned to carry nappy bags for my dogs when I walk them and unless it's in really open country like the moor, I pick it up!
I can't agree with any dog owner who says their dogs "enjoy" Badminton, they don't. Being almost trodden on, finding their way through crowded places etc is not a dog's idea of fun.. Running free, swimming in the lake, walking with interesting smells etc is doggy heaven, but as you can't let them off at the event, how can that be fun?
I doubt anything will be done but here's a suggestion.
Any dog that chases a horse at badminton in future should get an instant on the spot fine of £1000 to go to a horse charity. I bet there would be fewer dogs there as a result..

I agree with fining or banning people who's dogs get involved in any kind of antisocial behaviour.
I don't know if my pups enjoyed it (I mean how do I know for sure what they enjoy and don't) BUT they loved meeting the hoardes of kiddies that came to pet them and they enjoyed meeting other doggies.
Once I could see they were tired we all went home, I was beaming with my dogs behaviour even in the face of two westies going for them they maintained their cool and were brilliant all day.
It saddens me to think some people were looking on with hatred (or whatever) towards my dogs - I think that's such a shame.

Hypocritical since I will be taking Tinks to Chatsworth next week, but I;m always weighed down with poop bags, and keep her close to me, and dont go near the tradestands etc when its crowded, she doesnt bark and if she does, she gets marched away. Her lead and collar fit her

I don't think it's fair on the dogs to take them. And yes, sadly the actions of an inconsiderate group of people do spoil things for others.
Tinkerbee - what would you do if Tinks was banned from Chatsworth? It's just that I can't see how you can support a ban, but still take your dog to these events. Shouldn't you walk the talk?

Well that depends a lot on your dog and whether you spend hours dragging it around the crowded trade stands or whether you keep clear of the main crowds, which can be done.
