Ban horse slaughter petition.

Have seen this link on a youtube vid, and thought i should re post. They need 25,000 signatures.
Taken from the site:
"The terrible news of the passing of the horse slaughter law has come to my attention. I am livid with the fact that our president, President Obama could pass such a terrible, inhumane, and abusive law. These horses have such big hearts and have the capability to love something as much as humans, yet they now can undergo and awful death. Each horse has the right to a peaceful death and not a slaughtering. It is so offensive to horse owners like me, that other horses out there can be hurt and tortured like that. Please sign this petition to save these innocent animals from a torturous death"

Slaughter does not necessarily mean hurt or torture - so I think the basic premise of this petition is flawed. If that's not the issue (as it seems to be), the petition should have been worded better to make it clear what the issue is.

Do forners' votes count anyway??
 
Do you have a link to the law so we can actually see what has been passed?

Their blurb is written in a very emotive way, but I would want to know FACTS before anything else :)
 
Agree with others. Slaughter does have its place and to be honest-it is needed now more than ever. People think of the word slaughter and imagine some very inhumane ways that these animals could die in-which isn't always the case. (I realise sometimes it is, but most decent equine people do their research on recommended slaughter houses if they are sending their stock/horse to one)
 
I would quite like to know what the creator of the (very badly written) petition thinks slaughter actually is...

never ever thought of horse slaughter in this way.. hmm i am going to delete the post, as after reading every ones posts, and researching into it, i must admit, i do believe horse slaughter is okay, as long as it is done humanly. I eat cows, pig, sheep and am not worried about how they were killed.

ps. I get so very angry reading these silly hand on heart petitions that mean well but really do the total opposite, so, OP my comments above aren't actually directed at you.

I am not against slaughter, I am against the inhumane treatment and transport of slaughter-bound animals. I would actually prefer more slaughterhouses spread around the country- therefore decreasing journey time, removing more unwanted and neglected horses (or any other animals for that matte) that live a life of misery which could provide more funding for the industry to improve transport and welfare. What needs to be done is to target the welfare of the animals involved. If slaughter is banned in one country then it will just mean more horses travelling longer distances in worse conditions that are not so tightly regulated in other countries.

Merry crisis that's a bit harsh!!! She's only a kid by the sounds off it and if she can learn a few things about slaughter and why it's needed, it will be a job well done.
 
I think this is a very usefull thread that will benefit many people, to open their eyes on horse slaughter as so many people do not consider the upside and are in the 'horse slaughter is evil mindset'

a very useful and educating topic for the OP and other readers :)
 
As others have said, definitely not signing. It's a good thing.
As for the petition and how badly it's written - they get a single bullet in the head and it's over before they even realise what's happening. I'm not sure how much more humane people expect it to get.

Maybe it being legalised will make people think about the real problem and just why there are so many neglected/unwanted horses in the world and the reason so many end up getting slaughtered - overbreeding.
 
Horse slaughter for the meat entering the human food chain was banned a few years ago in the USA.
What happened? Horses were carted for days often in two tiered lorries, no stops for food or water, several thousand miles to either Canada or Mexico where they went for slaughter anyway.

Thousands of horses were abandoned or just neglected just because there was no way to get rid of them without it costing owners money.

What is needed is not a ban on slaughter but for it to be run on similar lines to the UK.

America might be the most powerful nation in the world but in many, many ways it is extremely backward in its animal welfare and slaughter houses, for all animals, as well as transportation of all animals is one of them.
The fact that the ban has now been reversed is a better thing than is existing at the moment.

I will not be signing.

videos aren't for the faint hearted

plus the stun guns designed for cows (researched this ages ago but cant say if horse stun guns have been introduced because i dont know so don't shoot me down on this!)- horses skulls are much thicker than a cow's skull and often do not penetrate the brain on the first attempt- requiring up to three bolts. electric prodders are used and the flight animals panic in the cramped conditions.

I hate the thought of killing something that could have been the perfect partner for someone, but never had the chance...however...until humans learn how to look after the planet properly, not over breed (other animals AND ourselves) we're just going to have to live with it :(
I think it makes me so sad, because Ned was on the way to slaughter, now he's my best friend.

Yep, the OP is posting in the wrong place for this sort of thing really :o

I certainly think slaughter is acceptable, given the over-breeding situation.

The legislation on slaughter is very tight in the UK and standards are generally very well maintained. Although it is possible in rare cases for up to 3 bolts to be required, we really are talking about a very small minority.

thanks, yes hence why more slaughter inthe uk ( even though this is american) would be beneficial as i said in my other post. I spent work experience in a pig and cattle abbatoir and the process was very quick, pigs came from local farms, short journey in well spaced trailers- standards were extremely high and dirty animals were rejected etc- slaughter itself was very quick too.

I know, I've worked in abbattoirs too - such fun ;) it's very efficient and I don't think it's especially stressful for the animals - who are rather oblivious, imo...
 
Most vets use a bell gun with a free bullet nowadays though don't they? I thought captive bolts were no longer used for horses as they are so ineffective. I believe the slaughterhouses use a .22 rifle for horses again using a free bullet.

I think so, but I confess I've never seen horse slaughter. Vets certainly no longer use the captive bolt.
 
If I were a horse, I'd much rather take one trip to a UK slaughterhouse than about a dozen to auctions.

UK horses probably have the best possible care throughout the slaughter process in proportion to every other country I can think of. The transport regulations alone are far stricter than in the US or Europe.

For the old, sick & simply unwanted animals who people won't have PTS in their own paddocks it's kinder than just abandoning them.

In a perfect world, there would be no need for slaughters.
