Hiya sorry if this sounds like a stupid question! my boys back legs fill a bit when he is in the stable so I got some magnetic boots for over night which are great! But due to the recent weather he has been not able to be turned out as much so I was thinking to alternate between bandages and his boots.

He also has bandages on his backs for extra support when ridden, as he is getting on a bit.. I have both fleece and elasticated bandages and as I am not the most experienced with it I thought I would ask you lot the do's and dont's of bandaging. I know the basic stuff but want to get it firm in my mind.

Which type of bandage are best used to exercise in, elasticated, polo? Do you always use gamgee with them when you use them? Thankyou

I was always advised that two hours tops for magnets, and wouldn't want boots on over night.

Elasticated must be used with gamgee underneath. Polo ones an be used without gamgee. However they don't over a great deal of protection, although offer a little support. You would probably be better with sports boots behind.

Elastic bandages for exerciseing..... Always with gamgee or fybagee!! This is to help spread pressure evenly and stop sores plus restricted blood flow

Polo/stable/fleece bandages for stable or travel....when traveling the bandages go right down to the coronet band....stable they can stop either over or under fetlock....really should be used with gamgee or fybagee, but can get away without it.

Always bandage from front of leg to back of leg....same with wrapping the gamgee/fybagee I.e on left front leg everything goes anticlockwise!
Bandage with even pressure all the way down the leg and back up....keep bandage firm but not overly tight
Bandage should overlap by 1/2 the bandage each time you go down the leg.
To check firmness of bandage you should be able to only get one finger between leg and bandage.

Oh really? I just use them per previous owner's instructions.. I will look a lot more into that then!

I did have him in boots all round but they rubbed at what i would assume was a pressure point and he started to get white patches so I tried the fur lines ones which freaked him out totally haa, it looked like when you put boots on a dog!

Can't say I've ever put boots on a dog?

I mean when you see people put those little shoes on small dogs and they walk all bizarre and gangly, I probably spend too much time on youtube haha

I had the Mark Todd ones on originally, then I tried the John Whitaker ones with a separate fur material I put underneath

This. Couldn't put it better if I tried.
