I've got a TB whose recovering from breaking down. He's been sound for 6 months, but he must have done something whilst turned out a few day's ago, his leg swelled & he was lame. I've been cold hosing used cooling clay & bandaged & the swelling has now pretty much gone & he's sound. He's becoming a bit restless in the stable so I want to turn him back out for a few hrs at a time, my question: Should I bandage him, put boots on or nothing for turnout?
TIA

You have to be careful with bandaging - its an art to getting it right and they can overheat the tendons. Boots can just as easily overheat the tendons. Ice cupping is far better than cold hosing in my opinion as its an ambient temperature.

If he is going back out in the mud you described in another thread then I would not put anything on as they will get muddy and may make matters worse, it sounds as if he may just have tweaked something or even just knocked himself and will be fine, bandages or boots offer no real support so I would not use anything except possibly the first time to protect him a bit if he hoons about , his legs will be best left uncovered to prevent over heating.

Thanks. I've managed to persuade the YO to let me use a small dry paddock for him, so unless we have more torrential rain the mud shouldn't be an issue. I think he may have just slipped on the mud surrounding the gate and pulled or twisted something, he's got over it considerably quickly, I just panicked when I saw his leg blown up & hopping lame & thought the worse, I've seen it happen too many times & lost too many horses that I cared for.

mossyjo i dont no about your TB but might goes out in a pair of over reach boots on front and a sausage boot behind, he has less injuries with this combo then any other, and as other have said boots can made the tendons very hot, i was lucky i checked my lad one day when he was out in brushing boots i was horrified at the heat that was building in them!! so off they came! we now just work in them and even then i pull them off the moment i get off!!

Thanks, I'm thinking it best just to turn him out with nothing & keep my fingers crossed that he won't go mad when he finally get's back out!
