After 6 weeks battling cellulitis and various antibiotics - we seem to be on the right track. We thought we'd sorted it over a week ago after 10 days of Baytril and bandaging with cling film wrap of flamazine/steroid/antibiotic potion. Leg was looking brill, then 2 days after coming off antibiotics his leg blew up again last Monday and by the time the vet came out at 5pm was pretty much back to where we started :( So been back on Baytril a week along with the potion wraps and the leg is looking pretty much normal again. Bandages have been done on a 2 day rotation and when taken off i've been cold hosing the leg and then taking out in hand or ridden for a half hour walk/trot and the exercise is definitely helping. Then when back from exercise re-bandaging after the leg has dried.
I just want to gauge opinions on the bandaging. He's still got a couple of small area's from where the skin split again with the swelling but the potion has been working its magic. But the area's that were scabby before, although now not are coming off in big flaky bits/sloughing. So not happy to leave his leg open until the skin is stronger after all the issues we've had with this over the last 6 weeks. But don't think we'll need to continue the potion much longer. I'm thinking of putting something like Aloe Vera over the area that's been surgically clipped with a melolin dressing on rather than the potion and cling film, then the soffban and vet wrap as we have been doing but changing this daily along with cold hose and exercise before repeating.
Open to views on what others would do. Thinking on doing this for a week or so and then change to standing wraps overnight and taking off for the day. He's still in the hard standing area 24/7 as i'm not happy for him to go out properly until we sure we've nipped this in the bud. He's continuing on the Baytril as it seems to be doing the trick and i think it was just stopped too soon the last time. Have got administering that to a T though with a tube on a syringe after he point blank refused his dinner with it in after a few days!

I used Manuka honey on the scabs/burst wounds when my mare had lymphangitis. I used to walk her in hand and cold hose twice a day which I thought helped a lot to keep the swelling down. I would still keep bandaging and gradually take the bandage off. I would take it of during the day and bandage again at night. Also, if she is comfortable, I would turn her out to keep her moving as much as possible. Good luck!

Definitley would want the horse out and moving as much as possible!

Also, what has worked a treat in the past for me is a sea salt water soak (found this out after taking a previous case, which would always slightly fill if stood in for a couple of hours, even 9 months after the initial injury, to the beach. From that day on the cellulitus never returned!)

Had a horse very poorly with ulcerated lymphangitis a couple of years ago. Once it had settled after a whole winter of walking out in hand 3 times a day and anti biotics and ant inflam I always kept well padded stable bandages on both back legs. Worked a treat for keeping swelling down and assisting circulation.
