Hey all,

my horse has been on box rest for 2wks, he got a very bad wound to the outside of his right knee which may have slightly nicked his tendon sheath. He is not lame, and bandaging has now stopped, with no swelling whatsoever for the last week, he is now on paper bedding and wound is being washed twice daily and wound gel put on it. I took him out for a small walk on sat but as you can imagine he just wanted to run free...i cannot get hold of my vet and i dont know what to do from hereon...lead walking him is a nightmare and i dunno if i had him on a short lunge would that be ok...he'll still try and bolt and rear and buck...any ideas...i'd love to just leave him run it off but doubt that's a good idea...please HELP!

Many thanks

What have you been told to do in terms of exercise & recovery? The vet should help you to put together a practical plan, so keep on trying to get hold of them until they do this with you :)

If you are supposed to be doing short walks in-hand but have control issues, there are a number of different restraining headcollar or bridle options, or you could go down the sedation route. If he is food motivated you could try keeping his attention with food. If you are concerned he will get away from you try doing it in the school or an enclosed space first. Sometimes turnout in a small paddock or around a safe yard is better if they are going to react to it in a calmer way!

Good luck!
