OK, I am a worrier when it comes to legs and 9 times out of 10 i use fleece bandages when schooling, for support and protection.

Anyway, as some may know, new mare is on box rest for 3 weeks as she has done something to check lig

There is now now heat or swelling and, all being well in 2 weeks' time I will bring her back into gentle work (on the vets reccomendation).

Anyway the point is. Do people still use excercise bandages as opposed to fleece bandages for flatwork? I was wondering if they would offer more support?

By exercise I mean the elasticated ones that you put over padding?

The theory behind how bandages offer support is totally lost on me but I would have thought elasticated bandages, when applied expertly, would have more benefit than just wrapping a length of fleece around the leg.

From articles I have read heat can 'soften'? the tendon, leaving it susceptible to injury, which is why all your new event boots have airflow designs. As far as I can see, wouldn't fleece bandages just build up heat on their legs?, I also don't think they would offer the same support as elasticated exercise bandages, but I always worry about applying these safely. What are you using them for? It it's protection from knocks, I would use a boot, if it's support, I would use a proper exersize bandage with pad, but hose legs down after each session. I would keep fleece bandages for travelling or stable use.

I never trust myself to exercise bandage as i am so uncertain of how tight to do them, having said that i used to play horseball and we used to bandage all 4 legs with gamgee under and then exercise bandages, i found these supportive but now use a set of sports medicine boots instead as the have the extra sesamoid support strap and i can be more certain about the tension.
Sorry that is all a bit waffley, pleased your new mare seems to be getting better will keep fingers crossed for when you start to work her.

Ditto Boss, I just do not get bandages, sorry! A horse I used to groom at Duncan Inglis' had had tendon probs and I had to gamgee, then splint, then bandage - this I CAN understand as there was stable support going on.

I've used fleecys for ages for schooling, and I must say they seem to wick moisture quite well. If I need extra, I use Eskadron Climatex pads underneath, which are about £20 a set, but mould really really nicely to the leg.

I use exercise bandages sometimes but more for the protection from knocks they offer than for support. If I wanted a boot that provided as much protection as a bandage I would go for SMB II as I think they are about the best at the moment
