Please could you reccomend me some stable bandages for my TB's hind legs? She gets filled legs at night. I've been borrowing some quilted pads with electicated fleece bandages over the top but need to get my own, so any ideas?

I don't like the thin foamy pads as I've heard bad things about them, so am looking for something thick, breathable, safe, and that will provide the support she needs. Oh, and in green or grey if poss (our colours).

Thank you, and mulled wine with mince pies if you can suggest some :)

You could try something like premier equine no bow pads with fleece bandages over the top in your chosen colour?

I find bandaging a bit time consuming so I recently bought some polypad rappas for my older horse which are really nice and I think come in different colours. They just fasten up with velcro easy peaasy!

If you're worried about them being too tight then first step would be to lose the elasticated bandages. I find proper knitted 'stable bandages' as opposed to fleece wrap much more neatly and are easier to wash/pick bedding off. Any pad/fibagee is fine, its the tension that's the important bit to avoid slipping/gaps/marking legs/damaging tendons.

As an aside, anyone else finding it impossible to order bandage online as what is described as a 'stable bandage' is not neccesarily so? I received fleece last time. Fleece is for wrapping the polo ponies! Humph.

Thank you. I don't think I described the ones I'm currently using very well. The felt bandages on top of the wraps aren't entirely elasticated, they are felt for the amount used to wrap from the top to the fetlock, then elastic for the amount used to go back up the leg. (Sorry if that doesn't make much sence!)

So basically I'm asking which would be the best out of these combinations?
1. Pad/wrap (is thin or thick better, or doesn't it matter?) with a knitted bandage on top
2. An all in one, such as the Polypad Rappa http://www.polypads.co.uk/acatalog/Bandage_Rappas__Pair_.html
3. Pad/wrap with a bandage like I'm currently using on top.

Thank you for your help! I'm just a bit worried about damaging her legs so want to ensure I'm using the correct type.

I would go for knitted with any pad underneath them. I find the 'puffy' pads ( I bought premier equine ones and would describe them as 'pillow like'!) hard to get neat and straight and old style gamgee or eskadron style ones much neater. Benefit of spending more on eskadron style is they are far easier to keep clean without destroying them.
Bandaging will be more effective than wraps in general, although some of the stable boots as opposed to wraps work well but are pretty expensive. PE make reasonably priced ones- neoprene type black outer with pads inside. If you are at all worried about bandaging and can't find someone one competent to help you, then I would go for boots- those scary stories really are scary and really do happen.

Thank you LoubyLu, that really helped.

I am competent but just needed to check. I do also have a yard full of friends willing to help if I get stuck. Right.. off to check the bank balance!

Hi
I can highly recommend Back On Track leg wraps, they are easy to use and contain ceramic fibres that keep the legs at the correct temperature at all times, trake a look at http://www.backontrack.com/uk/products/horse/quick-wraps/
If you want any more information pm me.

These look great but I'm on a student loan so can't afford them unfortunatly. Same goes for the Thermatex ones :(

I think I'll go for the Premier Equine stable boot wraps http://premierequine.co.uk/acatalog/Boot_Wraps.html

Any critisisms of these before I buy?

Thank you for everyone's help :)

Hi Jasmine,
Did you ever receive feedback about the Premier Equine Stable Boot Wraps? I am looking to purchase those wraps as well, and I'd love to know what you have discovered! They seem like a great alternative to traditional standing wraps.

Regards,
Taryn

I can recommend the eskadron fleece stable bandages, used them on my TB and they were brill as quite flexible but supportive :)

Sadly quite hard to find in stock sometimes
