Daisy's lameness turned out not to be the hoof abcess that we thought it was . She was almost completely sound after 3 days box rest so I turned her out into her small starvation paddock. It is level and flat so we hoped that she would burn off the steam she had been building up while on box rest without going mad.

First thing this morning YO caught her banging her way out of the field gate and then escaping into the passageway betwen fields where she ran about eating. She undid much of the good work from the boxrest and is now a bit lame again. YO has now bolted gate more securely but she has apparently been seen banging the gate again. She doesn't want to come in, she just likes the look of the grass on the other side.

Has anyone had any success stopping their horse banging on a gate to be brought in? I can't fence it off with some tape because she barges through. I can't leave her on box rest forever, she was sound and going completely loopy, but now she is lame again. It's possible that this was how she injured hserself in the first place

The best thing you can do is ignore her behaviour and make sure that you NEVER bring her in for standing there banging the gate. Otherwise she is training you to do just that.

Impossible to say if she injured herself like this initially...

What sort of gate is it? If sort with gaps in it (eg 5 bar) DO be careful as they can get caught up which can be VERY dangerous.

Suggestions - WORKING electric fencing, wind chime, plastic bags, balloons, black sacks or change of routine. Depends on the horse really...

normally i would ignore the behaviour and hope she would get bored but I want her to get better, not exaccerbate the injury.

TBH we suspect that if it does turn out to be a strain she might well have done it when the field next to hers was harrowed on Friday. I didn't know it was being done and YO wasn't to know she is tractor phobic, quite possible that she did it when panicking.

she doesn't care about electric fencing unless it is mains, she has skin like a rhino

black sacks/bags might be worth a try
