I make a bed with small banks. I don't believe they help to stop a horse getting cast, I do it to keep warmth in. I always put the water bucket at the end of the bank and pack bedding round it to stop it freezing (we have an automatic waterer but ponio cannot reach it). Ponio is so smal I also think they help stop him banging his legs when he rolls or lies down.
 
Nope don't use banks. My mare used to get cast in a 12x12 and nothing we did re bed/banks made a blind bit of difference. Ended up building her a bigger stable and she's never done it since.
 
Yes, watched my pony get cast before.

Straw bed, on rubber mats, huge banks - if they are normal sized she pulls them down [what a delight she is]

she lays down and rolls alot so i feel more at ease knowing she is safe

i also find if i make really compacted decent sized banks on a sunday and her bed is looking a bit low during the week i can just pinch a bit from the banks rather than going to the barn - saves me some time.
