I want to buy one for my step dad's birthday but I was surprised they aren't waterproof , can they be sprayed or anything to make them waterproof not just water resistance .

Why don't you get him a barbour waterproof one instead?

If it's the wax look you're looking for, then do get it anyway as they are great for keeping you warm as long as it isn't lashing down with rain.

He has asked for one called Bedale and it's only water resistant, I have tbh I thought for the price they could at least make it waterproof lol

If you buy the waxed ones they are waterproof but you have to treat them occasionally with their wax solution to maintain the waterproofing. The wax jackets can only be sponged to keep them clean, they cannot be washed or dry cleaned. As a result over the years they retain some rather charming odours! :)

I know, they are proper pricey! I've coveted a new one for a long time and decided that for what they are, I can't justify it. I like the "look" but not at the cost of practicality. I used to use mine in all weathers and it really makes them whiff a bit.

However.... as a gift, I think it is rather a lovely one! As long as you put in the card... "don't go out in the rain!" and he's happy just to pose :D

Ah ha, yes yes they did. They told me most of their jackets arn't designed for the outdoors, especially the Barbour International range which really is for the high street. Haha. I have however tested both of mine in heavy rain post waxing and neither have leaked.

The traditional Barbours were only ever truly waterproof and windproof once you'd waxed then. Grab a pot, a hairdryer and a brush. Only needs doing once a year.

I wish I could have been bothered :D

I love my bedale, and its definitely waterproof.

My first one started to fall apart after 20 years, so I gave in and got another 2 years ago. I know they are pricey, but if they last for 20 years then I think they're worth it :)

I can't comment on Barbour - far too nice to actually use and wear around horses and dogs (!) - but I bought 2 much cheaper wax jackets which have treated once and they are fully waterproof.

I'm not going to lie, one in particularly stinks now as I don't think I'm supposed to wash it, but it's still waterproof.

If my cheap wax jackets are waterproof - I would imagine more expensive are :)

Hope he enjoys his present - I'd be thrilled if someone bought me a Barbour!

Odd; I've got three Barbour wax jackets and all of mine are waterproof. My Bedale is 20 years old raggy round the sleeves, smells odd, is a funny colour but keeps even the most driving rain out. I keep meaning to send it back for them to restore it. I have a modern International and that's waterproof although I haven't worn it in the lashing rain for prolonged period (it's for best).

I have four, and recently bought my husband one too (he winced at the price, but I reminded him they are an investment buy and it will still be a great jacket in 20 years!).
I have a bedale, amongst others, and it's totally waterproof. I don't find it to be that warm, but you can buy zip-in liners to keep cosy. I also have a utility jacket, which I wear everyday and have done for the past 9 years, a vintage fitted wax jacket, and my newest is a fashion style one with a waist belt. It's so thick and warm I haven't been able to wear it yet!
