I was jsut reading that "will they ever learn post" and it got me fuming again about what happened to my mate the other day! As feed etc has been going missing, and my mate worked out that att he rate her feed was being stolen it was going to cos her an extra£540 a year if it kept on we bagged up and counted all our feed.

Well, some little beggar took the BAGGED feed!! I mean WTF!!! I am going to count mine tonight so that I know how many bags I have left as 1 feed bag does me a month at 2 scoops a day.

I have said that we need to get everyone to say exactly which bins and which feed is theirs, then we will see who is taking it as it will be the person that has none! I also suggested she writes Bute on each bag to that they think they contain Bute and they wont touch them!

We are assuming it is the teenagers as the Adults all have plenty of feed - so we think they are just scared to ask their parents for more feed as horsey is costing more to look after than they thought etc etc.

That's why I love my yard - no-one would ever steal feed, in fact no-one would even dare borrow without asking first! We're all adults as well which helps!
My feed is all at home now, if it goes missing I suppose I'll have to blame the builders!

Well if I was you I would open a bag and plant something nasty in it(like a rotten piece of fish)they won't come back for more or a note saying'We know who you are you robbing scumbag' planted in the bag........but,that's me,pure evil!

Lucky you!! What makes it worse is that most of the kids (99%) are well off!! I mean like they go to posh schools, get posh geat 5k+ horses! Beau is like the runt of the yard and people have saddles worth more than him!! So why on earth steal feed!!

Although, It could just be some bloody big rats! I mean like MAAAAAASSSSSIIIIIVE ones!

We have the same at our yard (although luckily not in my barn). We all know who does it but can never catch her in the act - next step is to rig up cameras!!

Hehe, I have been thinking of something really evil to do but I can't as they would figure it out!
I htink having 3 different feed rooms is what makes it worse - plus ours is UNLIT. But the bins are all marked with the owners names and her horses are the only 2 on the yard with those names!

Well the bins are getting padlocked shut in a few days anyway!! Which will unfortunately mean that unless a key is left hidden they wont get fed if owner isnt up.

This happens at our yard and my friend put notes in all her bins/sweet tubs etc, saying "stop steeling my food you theiving b*****ds or ill chop your fingers off and i know who you are" I dint bladdy stop them they clearly havent got any consience (sp?).

Someone suggested putting mouse traps in there and you would litterally catch them "red handed".

why dont you just put your feed in a lockable feed bin?
you can buy the metal ones on ebay for £80 inc delivery, they hold 4 big bags of feed, and can be locked with a paddlock, will save you and your friend a lot of money in the long run by the sounds of things!

I don't have this problem with my liveries. I have a rule that all feed is kept in locked rodent proof bins.

2 reasons...

1 rodents.
2 If a loose horse ends up in the feed room it can't gorge itself. Just imagine what would happen if a horse had access to everything in your feed room, all night. Dead horse and/or hideous vets bil and would probably get sued!

Above all, locking away all feed is basic safety!

We would, but all the bins are in a cargo container, and so room is limited! and I can imagine jsut how much it would piss folk off having their bins moved just so we can stick these two metal bins in! Plus unfortunately shelling out for them right now isnt an option - the cheapest one I found was £70 for a 2 bag version!

I have said though that if the whole yard had the metal ones that you load the feed at the top then take it out the bottom - the ones with the metal shelf underneath - then it would be easier, and cleaner and take up LESS room - but the big issue would be ££!!

You can put padlocks on dustbins and prety much anything. All you need are a couple of sets of padlock hasps and pop rivetor nut & bolt them on, use locktight or superglue so the bolts cant be undone or work loose. Hasps are a couple of quid at a hard ware store.

If you have a padlock with a code, you can tell it to the person doing the feeding if you can't be there.

I'm just glad our yard is so nice. All the horses are fed by YO (so DIYs are, I suppose, assisted DIYs) so there's a locked feed room. The only things that disappear are the things 'borrowed' by kids - grooming stuff etc. - and not returned, but even that's improving. I must say we're all (the liveries) very respectful of each other. My YO asked today if she could try my saddle on another horse (just try, not ride) even though she has carte blanche to use my stuff.

Or run chains through the dustbin handles and lid handle and padlock, Cheap and simple.

A friend had this problem, this is what we did to find the culprit ,we got the oldest bin of hers put some feed in and down the insides of the bin we put ink, lots and lots of it,we put lid on and went in the tack room and waited, about 30 mins later a girl came in with blue ink over her arms ,face lol,she never had a problem again lol.

the cheek people have these days, just shows you cant trust nobody, luckily for me im on a full livery yard and dont have to worry about feed, but still theres no reason to steal

This is what i do, cheap, cheerful and very effecive.

Change your feed to a really high energy feed then wait!!!
Na get a lockable box.Do you know anyone who is good at woodwork? We have a huge wooden box (used to be councils for there clydesdales feed, mates hubby got it)padlocked no matter what yard we are on as have been there with that one!For some reason mice/rats have never chewed into it in the 10 yrs we have had it.
Do like the idea about ink tho!Everyone on yard would know then!Oh the humiliation!!
PS a bit much not having a lit feedroom given the price they charge!!

Put some moustraps in your feed bin everytime you leave, if anyone hurts themselves it's their fault, theivin gits, if they complain your answer is that you put them in there to trap vermin, which is true and worked
wink.gif
, then you can say what were you doing in "my" feed bin.
