Hi all,

I am looking into buying a bareback pad for the summer months for gentle hacking and possibly light work in the school. I saw many recommendations for the Little Joe bareback saddle as it has the double billets and is somewhat more rigid through the gullet to relieve pressure on the spine. In particular I like the option of using stirrups if needed, dependent on whether madam decides it's going to be a spooky day or not.

However, as they are a U.S. company, I would end up paying an obscene amount of import tax, which is not ideal. Does anyone know if there are any suppliers in Europe or if there is something similar on the market here? I will link the one I was looking at here.

I have a Christ Lamfelle one, that you can also supposedly use stirrups with. I personally won't use stirrups with a bareback pad though, as I think it would still put too much pressure in one place.

My Christ one does have padding under the seat area, also a knee roll and cantle roll.

Unless you can sit a spook or a spin bareback please do not put stirrups on a bareback pad. As you lose your balance the pad will start sliding to one side and will deposit you on the ground.

Although some bareback pads say they can be used with stirrups they still place a lot of pressure in one place. Plus - as plante says - they slip if you put pressure on them in that way! If you want to use stirrups but don't want a treed saddle you would be better off with a properly fitted treeless.

Sitting to her spooks aren't a problem, I've had 5 years of practice at it now :p
I wouldn't be looking to use the stirrups the vast majority of the time, it would just be nice to have the option if she's being particularly spicy

@Red-1 I had a look at their website, I see they have an option to put a gullet into the plus pads - do you use this or just the D ring?

I don't use either, as I said, I don't use stirrups with a bareback pad.
Ah sorry I misread your original post. For your one, is the gullet at all rigid or is it very spongy?
Just trying to find as much information as I can as some of them are quite expensive and some of the images don't really show the structure of them

Spongy. It is just a bareback pad.

If you want stirrups, I would look at a treeless saddle, such as Solution.

I have a £40 number off ebay, it came with stirrups... which are pretty pointless but its a been a good investment for my posture.. And not getting prickly hairs in my bum!!

Thanks everyone for their input. As said, 9 times of 10 it would be used sans stirrups, hence why I was looking for an option with the potential for it - I've researched the risk of stirrups on these bareback pads and agree that they seem to cause far more trouble than they are worth.

So it looks something like the Christ Lamfelle will be ideal with the knee and cantle roll (God help my bank account), and not bothering with the stirrups on it

There's some nice ones in the Kramer catalogue very similar to mine, nice and comfy. Mine has no stirrups & they're removable anyway by the seems of the ones in the catalogue.

I love my Christ lamfelle Iberica (I think), it’s excellent for my position and amazing for keeping my bum warm on winter schooling sessions. BBP has pulled a few special shapes in it and I stayed in the plate. I have tried adding stirrups for emergencies but found they were placed too far forwards to be any benefit anyway. I was reluctant to spend that much but haven’t regretted it.

Anyone know of an alternative to christ lamfelle, synthetic rather than sheepskin? I can only find the the STONEDEEK for pony and cob on the kraemer website, not full size. Looking for both a pony and full size one.
