Has anyone got any recommendations for a bareback pad? There have been a few problems with Cobs saddle and back (SI and stifle) and I thought it might be worth trying him bareback.

Also.. Has anyone tried using pads instead of saddles when teaching someone to ride? Was thinking along the lines of lessons on the lunge to improve owners balance and confidence.

Much thanks and happy Easter :)

I'm hoping to get a Total contact saddle in a couple of months. Read lots of very good reviews!
However, came across the 'norton riding roller' the other day which is very similar and a fraction of the price although highly doubt the quality is comparable.

Do you know exactly what the back problems are? Bareback is fine to a point but its actually one of the worst things for pressure as all your weight tends to go down your 2 seat bones, and obv there is no tree/shockabsorbing material to spread that weight - so if the horse has back problems its something Id be quite wary of!

That said its great for position and balance :D

Best ones Ive seen are these (remember sheepskin is the most shock absorbing material going)

TigerTail. Those look really really comfy :)
Horse has had a problem with locking stifles on and off. More recently it's also started to effect his sacroilliac area. He's had a full check up last week by the vet who said he's ok to start building his strength up again.

Dumbo.. I did think of those too. I love the idea of them.

The riding roller looks like a fairly bad idea. Apart from lack of stability, how about the pressure concentrated across the horse's back? That is something that the good treeless saddle makers try to avoid.
I like the Best Friend bareback pad, which is comfy, has a bit of a lift to avoid wither pressure, and is pretty stable because it has a grippy underside. Personally I'd avoid a bareback pad with stirrups. I think a bareback pad has a place for learners to improve balance. Also riding in a rope halter or similar to spare the mouth.
Just because I love this picture of my nephew riding my Tiny Pony...

I've got a Best Friends bareback pad, I think it's really good. Grippy, soft, plenty of padding and a grab strap, just in case!

Best friend bareback pad :) very good and great value for money :) used one on my old mare who had we had hundreds of saddle fitting issues with! Rather than getting a hairy bum riding I invested in one of these pads second hand from ebay. Very comfy

I've also got a Best Friend bareback pad, love the handle on the front for faster or spooktastic stuff. Also agree with a bitless bridle or halter if you're going to use one for improving the rider's balance.

I wasn't planning to give her anything to hold on to :D but I probably should
