Just wondering how often you ride your horse bareback?

And if anyone else has one of these type bareback pads?

This is the closest I could find to the one my OH lent me only I like mine way better ;) Mine looks like a cowboys poncho sewn onto a fleece with a handy grab strap horizontally across the front rather than poking out in front like the one I've linked to. Also just noticed that the Parelli lot are selling these for a ridonculous amount of cash :rolleyes:

I have ended up riding bareback a lot the last year or so - ongoing saddle issues mean I just don't trust the saddle, so I decided I'd rather invest in a nice bareback pad.

I got one of these: http://www.horsedream.co.uk/proddetail.asp?prod=6303/262/WB Even more expensive than a Parelli pad, but I think worth it!

I rode exclusively (bar one ride) in it from last September til about 4 weeks ago. Had physio out on her regular visit about a week ago, and she was really pleased with horse's back - she said "it looks untouched, like a horse who's never been ridden in a saddle" :) I asked about pressure points where my seat bones would rest and she said there was nothing :)

I can ride off road on the local traffic free track - so I lead in-hand to there, clamber on and off we go :) Good for my position and stability too.

I met a lovely lady recently she and her husband just ride on a piece of sheepskin under their bottoms.

It works for them :).

I have to say I love mine, up till now it's just been for fun but since having my saddle issues I've decided to ride in it till I get the saddle sorted. It's sooo comfy for me, Loki seems to like it too (it helped us crack sitting trot!) and I can feel everything he's doing which is brilliant since with a conventional saddle I'm rubbish at feeling which leg he's on - I have to look ha ha!
We did everything in ours when we used it before, hacks, schooling and jumping! :D Lets just say it does wonders for your balance ;) It's great that you can have it with or without stirrups too :)

Had to pick up a new girth (£5 on ebay, bargin!) though since he's lost some weight but I'm actually looking forward to riding in it again ha ha!

Me too :D It's also improved my rising trot, as when horse gets his "big" trot going, it's easier to rise. And rising without stirrups is good exercise ;)

Oberon - this lady is just sitting on a half pad, I think - no girth. When I say I "ride" bareback - I just sit on the horse and congratulate myself for not sliding off in an inelegant heap. She, on the other hand, is riding :D I can but dream...

ETA - the closest we get to looking like her is the moment at 2:25 in the video. That happens with us a lot...

I haven't tried rising with no stirrups yet :o I''ll give it a shot though, I'm game! :D

Wow that was a brilliant video! Love how she made it look completely effortless :D

I think I'll stick to having a girth for now though, I have a feeling if I just got on a half pad and went on my merry way I'd fall off every few yards ;) Tbh I don't know why because the girth on mine is like a placebo security blanket, if you become unbalanced it does slip but I just like knowing it's tied on there ha ha!

How dies that lady keep the pad underneath her, I tried riding with a numnah and elastic surcingle but failed miserably when it kept sliding out behind me.

Riding bareback is the only reason I can still use a trampoline after having 6 kids. - I'm sure fellow mothers will know what I mean. Others probably don't want to know...

Still go out fairly often with daughters on bareback rides. Problem is that daughter #1 thinks she's immortal and quite happily goes into thumping canter / gallop over hill and dale. My hackneyx rides like a pogo stick (leaves rider with back pain after a good gallop, even with a saddle), and I'm ashamed to say that last time I gave up steering altogether, and just hung onto the mane until it was over!

Best exercise in the world, nonetheless.
