Following the thread on here about bareback, I thought I would give it a go! However, totally forgot to think about how I would acctually get on the horse in the first place! I didn't have anything tall enough! I wanted to get on in the school and our mounting block is on the yard around the corner, so not really an option. Tried the top bar of the fence but because its not a proper sturdy surface to push off of I sort of ended falling onto him, cue him trotting off and me falling off! I tell you though, falling off bareback is fantastic, nothing to get tangled in! And he was a star - when I fell off he just looked at me like I was an absolute numpty! So - how do you all get on your horses bareback?!!!

:D :D

A girl on my yard just stands on a bench and throws herself up there..but she rides bareback a lot so shes probably used to it :D With my boys high withers, I wouldnt dare ride him bareback for fear of...ahem...injury

Pony is only 13.2hh so I can usually vault on if needed (very unelegantly though!) or theres usually a stone big enough to help.

Haha Hevs - I have already tried the 'launching myself at him' technique - that didn't turn out to successful! He just stood there while I hopped madly up and down and looked at me like a total plonker! :D

Its nice and easy with a 13.2hh - I think I forgot how much taller he is compared to the ponies I used to ride -you could just fling yourself up onto their back!

I use the school fence when riding bareback but the largest i have ridden bareback was 15.2, have only ridden loan pony (14.1hh) bareback once and he bucked in canter resulting in me coming off, will not be doing it again.
I have ridden my mums 13.2hh pony bareback and she is comfy (sp) but still only a handfull of times in the past three years and will only do it in the school.

I sometimes try to get on the pony by taking a run up at him down hill whilst he's in the field loose. I never manage to get one most of the time (just throw myself into his side) and he doesn't move, just looks at me with pity in his eyes :p :D

NB I made that sound more dramatic than it actually is :D

Haha sound's so much like me!! Im having to ride bareback due to saddle problems o joy of getting on a 17.1hh!!!! So glad he just stands theres dispite me landing a heap on him bless him. The fence is just about high enough for me I use the school fence had a moment that could of turnd out to me ending up in a heap as I was just getting on a pheast shot out of hiding below the fencing in the school thank god he didnt react badly to it. Strange out on rides if one come's out of the hedge we normanly spin off in the oppesite direction this time right under his nose and nothing!!!! Im using a leadrope to hang onto untill I get more used to it again!!

lol stencilface - that pretty much sums up my attempts in one post! :D

bojangles - wow. 17.1hh. And I was just attempting for fun! My boy is 15.2 (and a bit) hh! Good luck in your bareback riding! :D

i use a wall or gate :D get myself to horse level and just swing a leg over - 9% of the time she stands still.. occasionally she has a sense of humer and then laughs at me on the floor lol!

i ride bareback whenever i can't be bothered to tack up :o
i also had 2 months bareback last year when i was having a saddle made to measure... had great fun - kept her fit going up the gallops and did schooling in the arena too - oh and had a good blast along the beach :D

Two weeks to go before saddler comes out!! Hope she's got something that's will fit really don't fancy having to ride bareback for much longer!! Ive done some schooling and went round the farm by ourself's today. Wishd I had a beach to ride on supose Im luckly to have farm to ride round and not to worry if I fall off as he can't get on to the roads.
I might ever feel brave and jump in the school soft landing of coz!!
Im not likely the itching legs afterwards lol.

i kind of leapfrog on! ive had saddle issues for the last few months so getting pro at it now! :D and i agree, my boy seems to behave SO much better bareback than under saddle!!

I decided to give bareback a go last summer - been approx 20 years since I last did it!

Now I'm 5'11" and my girlie is 16.2hh so this involved sweet talking to her whilst I clambered up the fence leant my hands on her withers (thus sticking my backside in the air!!) and half leapt half straddled her back.

She was brilliant and just stood there with an expression of pure exasperation. Only problem then was I discovered riding bareback is a definite skill and a 20 year break makes you very rusty! Lots more practice required me thinks.

To anyone unfortunate enough to witness the whole mounting expedition I can only apologise and hope the resulting therapy they required was not too expensive!

A wall on my yard, he is always ridden to the field bareback in a headcollar so stands pretty still which helps considering he is 17.1hh so you do need to leap :p

I normally get on a mountain block and hop on :P although, when i first tried doing it, even that proved very hard hahaha!!, and ellie is only 15.2 two ahhah

My sister gets on her 14.2 at trot . She runs next to him and then jumps just infront of his withers - seriously impressive .
