6yr old horse (PRE x TB), never been shod until this summer, had a pair in front as wanted to do a lot more longer hacks for a couple of weeks, all ok, feet grew rather fast as you would expect. Took them off after six weeks, farrier trimmed quite short (not frogs or soles) but neither of us thought it would be a problem after such a short time in shoes.
Seemed a bit tender on stones but jumped that evening on a surface fine. Next few days very sore, not too bad on grass but very sore on sandy, stony area, feet hot, standing on heels, almost looking lamanitic. Improved quite quickly, booting at times and bute. Now, just over two weeks later, left foot seems normal but right is still hotter, seems sound but still careful on tougher surfaces.
Previously been pretty good barefoot, have on-going battles with thrush but Red Horse stuff is making a big difference. Generally use boots in front for longer stonier hacks as not quite rock crunching. Diet is Alpha A oil, pro balance, salt, yeasac, grass is poor. Weight is just about ok dropped off a bit with the extra work, def not fat. The ground was very hard while she had shoes on and her feet did get long. I have a lot of faith in my farrier but he is far from pro barefoot!
Id appreciate any thoughts on whats going on.
Thanks in advance.
