Hi there. An introduction first. I am a long time lurker. I have 3 horses. 2 are successfully barefoot and competing but i am lucky with those as they have great feet and it was just a case of taking the shoes off and cracking on.
The third is a different story. She is tb/ arab just turned 5. She has the daintiest little feet. She has just had her shoes removed after about 11 months of being shod. Her front feet seem to be responding well 3 weeks bare. She was a bit shocked for a few days and i had to box rest until she was comfortable. But the walls are now growing. I have boots for the fronts. I alternate days using them for short 20 min walk hacks on tarmac
The hinds however are as flat as pancakes. The frog seems to be the floor touching point. I assumed the hinds would be no bother but am beginning to think they are going to be more problematic than the fronts.
I know the sensible answer is to get her some boots for the hinds. But just looking for thoughts on these titchy little feet. Anyone else had a horse that struggled with its hind feet?
She is very footy on uneven ground. But walks out well on smooth
Tried to attach a few pics of hinds, fronts and overall horse. Not sure if it will work tho. ??

It's surprising common for them to find it harder on the hinds but it's more difficult to spot. The giveaway is often a movement where they pick the foot up vertically, then swing the leg forward, then put the foot down vertically again.

I think you just need to give her more time at the moment. It looks like she has fat frogs that are probably taking too much weight while they pack down. Even boots won't usually help a huge amount with that.

I'd see how she is in a month.

Does she always stand under behind or is that since the shoes came off, or a one off photo?

Thankyou ycbm. Yes i’m afraid she does stand under behind. Not entirely sure what that means but assuming not good! She hasnt got great confo. I took a chance on her as a 3 year old as i liked her personality. She is very bold.
Shall i keep up the hacking hoping she will stimulate more hind hoof growth or back off and give the wall chance to grow?

Be careful, my experience of fat frogs that take time to pack down is that they can abscess. Go slowly with any increases in work and watch carefully.

If she doesn't stop standing under, I'd have a vet check her hocks, suspensories and sacroiliac. It's something I think always indicates an issue somewhere. Hopefully it's her feet and she'll be more comfortable soon.

Thankyou ybcm. Will pay close attention. Is this a case where shoeing may be better do you think?

There should be no need. The foot should concave up and the frog will go hard like tough leather, both things you want to happen.

I’d agree her posture is poor, camping under front and back. Could be the result of a number of things but is likely to result in a sore back and more pressure over the sacroiliac region. It may resolve as her feet get more comfortable or it may need more attention. I resorted to boots front and back with mine, not because he is at all footsore but because his posture was like your mares and I wanted to see if by wearing pads most of the time it would encourage him to land and stand better, to develop the digital cushion and improve the hoof structure. It is certainly helping.

Good to hear bbp thankyou. I will persevere and look to get some hind boots when funds allow. ??
