My mare has recently had front shoes removed (8weeks) she has had that time in the field. She has to wear boots to walk from field over stones. I just wanted some advice on how her feet are looking.
I
She lives out, has had no feed over summer. Over winter gets soaked grass nuts, with brewers yeast, msm, micronised linseed meal.
She is very flat on front feet, she has been in straight bars for 12 months. Back of her hoof is weak.
She has had kissing spine surgery, she was looking really stiff behind, had steroid ink in sacroiliac and still not right. Decided to give time in field so had 8 weeks off. however she looks loads better so I have pootling round arena bareback and seems a lot more comfy, she won't do dressage again but I might ride round arena or field twice a week. Going to leave shoes off now. I do have a farrier to trim her - I tell him not to touch sole or frog now shoes are off. He just balances hoof.
Back feet don't look level but she stands cow hocked so not sure if limb not right or foot twisted.
If you look at this photo, you can see that both hooves (especially the one nearest the camera) will grow down at a much better/steeper angle.
Doing any exercise that she can cope with will be really good for her hooves, so pootling about bareback or walking her out in-hand is great. Tarmac is great for unshod hooves. If you don't have smooth tarmac and she isn't comfy on stones, then think about getting some hoof boots.
Oh thanks so much, took me ages to put all those links lol.
Yes she has cavallo simple boots for fronts as just won't walk on any stones, she plants. We don't have any Tarmac it's all stony.
Bump
I did load them in order of feet but show a bit out of Order now. If you look at the album on photo bucket via the link they are all titled to make it easier
Yeah they really are changing angle a lot aren't they!! And it's not til u et down on hands and knees and take a pic that I really saw that you know.
I washed them all for photos so all wet, the black hind the sulcus does seem to go right up, I did prod it and she seems ok. I have blue sprayed all frogs now and heels seem a bit spongy at mo- I think due to wet then dry then wet then dry weather.
She is in field and sheep also graze too, and every time I pick feet they are just full of sheep ****, it seems to stick and stay in foot. The frogs look quite raggy and not great - do you think the sheep poo can rot them? Stupid question but never had to deal with sheep poo before as only moved yards 8 months ago.
What about heel length and also the white hind looks twisted
Thanks so much, I have had horse barefoot before (5yrs) ago but went with remedial with this one due to other issues, pressure and insurance claims. Now wanting to try the no shoe approach but I second guess myself a lot and not sure if she not building up frogs due to heel length or toe length or ????
