Barefoot and wet field!

Thanks Oberon, I am determined to do my best for him, even if those around me think I should shoe him or retire him, they think I am nuts, so nothing would give more pleasure than proving them, vet and farrier wrong!

The above could help anybody interested in hoof keratin...

Above is a study which tries to demonstrate differences in hoof & sole hydration.

Above, a reason why one shouldn't waste money on hoof dressings.

More above on hydration.

Just a google search as you can see. The one I want to find is proving elusive. I read a few years ago a study done by a lady vet with actual pictures of the hooves she soaked. I'll keep searching...
Thanks for that, in the first article I would say I was right, I have done a bit of work on hoof tensile strength and toughness, the discussion is very interesting in this paper.
In the second abstract says what i said about the arrangement in the sole being different to the wall
And the last indicates an increase mass in the sole.
I agree its a complicated subject and debate improves understanding, but it seems to simplistic to say all sensitivity is diet related, I will continue to read the posts and learn if thats ok.

Update today,
Well after yesterdays monsoon where he was standing in water, turned him out this morning, he looked ok but I think he has been messing about again so came in sore tonight over the concrete so I have put back up to 1 Danilon and think I will turn him out in boots again until he is more comfortable!

Oh drat. Feel for you POR. he will be fine soon. I was thinking.... Are you sure it's his feet even?

Could he have slipped in the mud and tweaked a muscle? All this damp affects joints too. I know my rubbish joints hurt more when it's damp. A horse fell slipping on the mud at our yard the other day. She is fine. Owner who also slipped twisted her leg a bit and has been a bit gingerly.

AG, you know, you may be right that it just isn't diet. Certainly, horn quality could be fully attributed to nutrients but yes, I agree that there could be other factors that cause pain inside the hoof. I don't know what those are though. What do you think it is?

To be honest,I really don,t know, the trouble with Romeo is that he has different things going on!
His near fore has an old navicular fracture and possibly a bone spur and ringbone on his off fore and I do feel that his stupid antics in the field do him no favours at all as this always seems to make him sore, but if I boot him he is fine!

He is an interesting case. He is lucky to have you. I am sure with your patience and determination, he will come sound in time. Time is what he will need :)

There are not a shortage of sensory (afferent) nerves in the hoof capsule, and the sole softens. On thing I have noticed over the years is wet ground followed by drying mud. The soles softens and the a dense cake of mud packed hard in the concavity of the sole and can be quite difficult to remove with the hoof pic. When you do manage to free it sometimes it has sole attached to it and the sole can looked etched and hollow. The flatter the sole in well trimmed or short foot the less this happens.
I am sure you are all aware of the mechanics of the hoof, I favor the Lungwitz 1898 version of events but Im just old fashioned :D An increase movement or counter rotation could in theory be effected by a softening of the sole.

Thanks Tallyho, I do hope he will come right, its such a shame he so loves to go
out and sometimes when he is doing a beautiful extended trot across his field you would not think there was a thing wrong with him!
