lol! Good suggestion above from KK. Don't think of it as swapping like for like. :)
Often less is more tbh.
They do get most of their nutrients from forage so any bucket feed is really only to supplement what is missing or occasionally extra energy.

ps. Do horses find hay or grass boring? lol Chop various greens sometimes if you want to add variety.

This is promising, I haven't changed my horses diet since taking his back shoes off, he gets twice daily (small square shovel scoops....)

1 sugarbeet (soaked, not dry!)
1 coarse mix
1 50g scoops (the ones you get given in supplement tubs) micronised linseed.

Aside from the coarse mix that seems pretty good - doesn't it?

Molassed sugarbeet or un? ;)

If un, then yes, apart from the coarse mix it sounds good :D.

Also KK is that over 2 feeds or that list twice a day?
Sorry, Friday afternoon brain and just totally confusing myself!!

Amandap- I dont think they really care, as long as they have something! Its just us humans who like to make things complicated :D

Thank you for explaining that!! :) So to sum up, keep the speedibeet, change the chaff to fast fibre (is it allen and page fast fibre? I have no clue as never fed it before ) and ask the vet if linseed would have the same effect as the corn oil and just ad a mug a day fo that? and add in a supplement along the lines of pro hoof- I have just had a look online and hundres have come up! is there another brand name etc?

This all boggles my brain

I think you've already worked this out but you don't need to feed chaff at all. either fast fibre or speedi beet will be fine with MICRONISED linseed added and then Pro-hoof. split into two even sized feeds a day. Simples :)

Glad to hear your scoop is a small one too ;) lol!

That was what I did I reduced my chaff down to a handful per feed and used it until I ran out - I didn't want to waste good feed or risk her going off her feed.

I'll clarify below:

If I were you I would go for:

Fast fibre or Speedibeet - just enough to get her to eat everything else, maybe two thirds of a round scoop once soaked. Per feed, if she isn't fussy and is a good doer you may get away with less
Micronised Linseed - start at 100g per feed and see if you need more to keep weight on. So that is 100g per feed 200g total per day, if needed you can go up to 500g total per day
Pro-hoof/pro-balance feed as directed (1 scoop a day for an average horse).
Salt Yes normal table salt, I buy the saxa stuff as it is in a handy container
Your usual glucosamine suppliment.

See how you get on with that and take it from there. You can always add other stuff or change quantities, I'm planning to add magnesium for mine now and will increase the linseed when she is in more work.

Hope that helps :)

Just so we are clear, which type of scoop?? :o

I use a round stubbs scoop, I take a scoop full of dried speedibeet and soak it (I make it a bit dry as my mare doesn't like it sloppy) and then each feed she gets between half and one whole soaked scoop round scoop again, normally about two thirds of a scoop a day. So the ready made bucket does about four feeds. Less than half a scoop and I struggle to mix everything in thoroughly enough, but I'm happy to increase it a bit if she needs a bit more due to work levels or weather.

Right so this evening she had about 3/4 big scoop of soaked speedi beet, sprinkle of chaff and balancer (again, to get rid of it) her corn oil (have a small bottle left so will use until its gone then get the linseed) and supplements. Morning have made an identical feed minus supplemens.
Sound better??

Sounds like you've made some good changes :)

My lad is now about 3 weeks bare behind and doing well so far :D He has had the following diet for around 10 weeks:
am & pm:
1 double handful Safe & Sound (changing to Halley's Timothy Hay Chop when used up)
1 Stubbs scoop soaked speedibeet
50ml scoop linseed (Charnwood)
Pro Hoof

(ad lib hay)

He's a fairly good doer cob, and is looking good on this - I may up the linseed a bit, as he is looking like he's dropped a bit of condition, but coat still fab and shiny since the linseed

I am glad your boy is doing well! I have been thinking of changing her diet slightly for a while, she looks good but I don't think quite at her best if you get me?
We will have to see how it all goes! :)

This is what I feed my TB mare. I also only give her about a quarter of a scoop of the Pro Hoof, not the half scoop that they recommend....
