Barefoot diet

OP - ignore Tallyho - she's clearly had too much to drink already.....as have I! :)

Seriously - high fibre, low starch, such as Fast Fibre or speedibeet, unmolassed chaff, micronised linseed is apparently the way to go - I like it, my horses don't, but they don't get a choice.

If you're not serious, try some racehorse cubes with added Mollichaff Extra and lots of turnout in lush green fields......

Yeah, my troll-dar is getting proper good these days... awesome :cool::cool::cool::cool::cool:

Wanted to see how far I could stretch it though, could have been good fun :D

Wrong it's not a troll post, I have a mare with navicular and am consdering my options.

Pity some of you always jump to conclusions

Excuse my ignorance but what would you feed a barefoot horse that you wouldn't a shod one?

Thanks

Nothing.

There is no such thing as a barefoot diet.

There is only a GOOD diet.

Barefoot horses just show the effects of a less than perfect diet more easily than shod horses do.

Oh god I feel really bad now!!!! So sorry!!!

What options are you considering and how far have you got? My boy was navi. We had got through a horrendous time of remedial shoeing... to not much avail really.

there isn't much difference in diet (excuse my jokes)... just a basic hi-fi, low sugar one.

It's just a simple, basic, equine appropriate diet. Horses don't get heart disease - it goes straight to their feet instead. So, although you will find the occasional indestructible horse, most will tell you immediately if they are internally unhappy by gimping on hard ground/stones or being tense and unhappy.

Many an owner will declare, "My horse can't go barefoot" over diet. It's an amazing blind spot amongst many owners and a cause of frustration to many hoof care providers.

My horse's diet per example;

Fast Fibre (calories)
Speedibeet (calories)
unmolassed hay chaff (texture)
salt
zinc, copper, magnesium, lysine, biotin (balances my forage)
micronised linseed (joint supplement, gut muculage, hoof moisture balancer, coat health)
yea-sacc (keeps a happy hind gut and stop rampant pooping)
Cat's Claw (general tonic)
Apple cider vinegar (taste and general tonic)
Turmeric (joint supplement)
Fenugreek (taste)
mixed herbs

and my good doer gets a bucket feed of;

Fast Fibre
unmolassed hay chaff
micronised linseed
zinc, copper, magnesium, lysine, biotin.
salt
yea-sacc
turmeric
fenugreek
mixed herbs

It's usually best to exercise caution around commercial feeds and don't get sucked into the marketing (like I always do :p)
You'll find a 'barefoot diet' will also suit a Cushings or Insulin Resistant horse too.

It doesn't have to be complicated - I just like to be in control of what I'm feeding ;)

There is plenty of advice here
