I keep asking my vet about barefoot and she always says she is not against it principle but doesn't think it would suit my navicular horse. She has asked me to find a barefoot specialist for her to talk to locally in the Portsmouth/Southampton area. Anyone???

I hope she talks to someone very soon, navicular is almost entirely an issue for shod horses. Shoeing forces the navicular in an unnatural angle and make it weight bearing which is is absolutely not designed to be. Unsurprisingly, navicular turns up. Saying barefoot isn't suitable for a navicular horse is like saying managing glucose isn't appropriate for diabetics!

Before the advent of mobile scanners vets would write off navicular horses as 'Incurable' whereas now the issues and physiology and progress are obvious : the majority with shoes off and a decent trimmer can have amazing progress and often go back to full work.

So hope someone on here can recommend someone local :-))

Yup, Trevor Jones is excellent, or Lucy Priory http://www.barefoot-south.com/

As said, shoes are the last thing a horse with navicular needs. It's so depressing when the people relied upon to look after our horses' welfare are so un-educated. It's not surprising that hoof care seems such a minefield to those forced to go it alone, when they shouldn't have to.
