Barefoot help

came to the conclusion that you could get 10 professionals (say vets) is one room to give a diagnosis on one horse with complex issues and you would end up with 10 different opinions and various diagnosis, with all 10 being sure that they were right and the others were wrong!

In reality they all might be slightly right and figured out one piece of the puzzle, but rare to find one that looks at the whole picture taking all possibilities into consideration, sadly :(

moral of the story being ask for more than one opinion!

I always say if you got all the best 'hoof people' in the world together for dinner.....they would spend all night arguing over which wine to drink - never mind talking about hooves :rolleyes:

Nobody has to do anything.

But it makes a damned sight more sense than shoeing a horse who has been fine barefoot for 11 years if the only reason is that it has gone footie.

I have not gone straight for shoes you have no idea what I did prior to going the shoe route!!! And why don't you know??? Because I never posted what I did before or how and what things I did.

So help the original poster by telling her! What the hell is the point posting saying you put shoes on, and not telling her anything about why you had to do it??? What help is that to man or beast?

But if I make a statement to what I did or am going to do its because I know what the problem and have done what I need to do with the vet so don't need advice..

I know why my gelding has gone footy I just did not post ALL the facts because I did not think I need too.

I trust my vet over any member here. They know my horse inside and out. My horse is in good hands she has no reason (after what we did last month) other than the ones she found on her examination to suspect anything else.

Leviathan, truly I am very keen to learn new things about feet. The only one I know so far that justifies shoeing a horse which has been sound for 11 years without shoes is a fractured foot bone.

PLEASE , if your contribution to this thread is to mean anything at all, tell us why your vet said that your horse should be shod.
 
a vet should not be put on a pedastal, most of them do not want to be there and will admit that the (attentive caring) owner knows their animal better than them.

you are paying for their educated opinion nothing more, they will not always be right and your horse will not respond in the same way as every other horse to any treatment or medication.

the same goes for (good) farriers, mine has said that he will never put shoes on my 5yr old out of choice and he desperatly wants my daughter to take shoes of her horse for at least 3months as she has underrun heals and he admits the only thing that can be good for that is barefoot.
