Hi

I was just wondering how many people now have barefoot horses. I for one have just had my ponios shoes removed due to finding out he has navicular.

So come on guys and show yourselves , let's see how many there are.

There are six horses at my house (one of them isn't mine) and they're all barefoot!

They range from a Cob Normande x to a 4 year old Hanovarian (although he may need shoes when he's competing) so there's no discrimination.

Our farrier actually advised it. I thought he'd be pro shoeing but he's quite the opposite and I trust him explicitly!

I'd love to see a pic of the Normande x

My horse is barefoot. She was a navicular write-off, but came completely sound within a short space of having her shoes off and being trimmed up by a KCLP equine podiatrist. She has been barefoot 6 years now, instead of being dead 6 years! So glad I found help when I needed it.

That like my boy!!!! Also KCLP EP - we were doing xc in very dry stony rough ground in just 12 months. Came 3rd!!!

Sort of.. horse is without shoes as has been on box rest after injuring himself in the field. They need to go back on before he can be turned out :)

Yours isn't barefoot RHino, it's temporarily without shoes, doesn't count, sorry. Also, if he needs shoes just to be turned out, then that's a sick set of feet the poor boy has on the end of his legs :( If you want some advice how to improve them so that he can manage without, just ask, we'll be happy to help.

I have four, only three in work.

Friend 1 has four, all in work.

Friend 2 has seven, two in work.

Friends 3 have my barefoot navicular write-off, now sound for well over a year.

Friend 4 has my spavined ex eventer in full work.

Friend 5 has up to seven horses hunting stony tracks on fierce hills in Exmoor.

Friend 6 has long distance horses, two I think, competing and two other riding horses at least.

Friend 7 has a Rockley Rehab, written off completely less than 4 months ago by a National Hospital and their remedial farrier, sound in a month and still sound.

None of these friends post on here, so as long as no-one else speaks for them, and you know who they are :), we won't duplicate.

3-but one is a 2yo, on is a 17yo who's never been shod and the other is 9 and was shod between 5-8. I use an EP but it's also worth pointing out, the two ridden horses are not in hard work. Life is easier without shoes!

Thanks, I know we don't belong in your club ;)

I don't honestly believe he could cope without shoes now; he is an old boy and I am not willing to make drastic changes to his management at this point... It is however something I will consider if and when I buy another :)

That's a VERY good reason to shoe. I'd do the same in your place. Let us know when you plan on joining the club - it's fun!

Oh poo it lost Rhino's response I was trying to quote too. I dont agree that age should be a factor - provided diet is right there is no reason whatsoever not to remove shoes. Should help in that there is less weight on the end of his old joints for a start! Recently removed the shoes from a 16 yr old TB with dreadful feet and shes sound as a pound and flying round the field like a 2 yr old :p

PS it shouldnt be a club or be bitchy to be barefoot!?

He is on a 'barefoot' diet as far as is practicable, and on a yard where the majority of horses are barefoot.. If there were a way to attempt rehab without having to watch my boy struggle then I would be very tempted but for the sake of letting an old boy live out his remaining time I would have to be absolutely convinced it was worth it :)
