I wanted to just post a few pics of the progress of my Dutch WB's feet who I bought 18 months ago. He had massive flat front feet which were very different in size but he had massive frogs. I knew when I bought him that his feet weren’t great but thought in time it could be corrected.

The farrier at the time who had shod him twice after I got him, really had hacked his frogs back to nothing, where before he had at least some contact with the ground with his frogs despite being in shoes. I tried to discuss with him how we could help improve his heels as I said they seemed to be getting more underrun and his heels were sagging over the end of the shoe. He basically threw a strop and said ‘if I wanted a perfect horse I shouldn’t have bought this one’. He then ignored me (uncomfortable silence) so I went and made a cup of tea for him. I came back and he’d started putting different shoes on him in front (wide web he said similar to natural balance). When I asked why he did that he said ‘to appease me’?!!! The following day he strained a check ligament on his flattest foot (OS)…. Sigh.

So that was my decision point as I’d read the best way to resolve underrun heels was barefoot. I looked at Rockley Blog and was amazed at how well the horses progressed. I came on HHO and Oberon sent me her fact sheet and I looked into changing diets. We started off on ProHoof & micronized linseed then added fast fibre and ad-lib hay. Trying not to change too much too quickly.
About 8 weeks later I’d found a new trimmer and she was booked to come take the shoes off. Other liveries standing watching bemused at the events gossiping behind my back “OMG she’s taken his shoes off”…. Seriously!
He was ok in the beginning on concrete but gimpy on stones as his feet were weak, thin soled etc. I booted hacking and sometimes in the school I would boot with pads if he was footy. Frozen turnout he had to be booted. Causing additional gossiping from onlookers. Each time thinking geez have I done the right thing….

Then had to change trimmer as the current one retired. We then moved yards in the last snow this year and things really got a lot better. I really got to understand that diet was crucial and had the grass and hay analysed. We changed to ForagePlus Winter balancer in summer after the analysis, plus additional Phosphorus, copper and Magnesium and his feet have improved loads to the point where now I’m brave enough to take boots off mid hack or the entire hack and go bootless.

We’re a year down the line. His soles are thicker but still thin. His has a little concavity in front, it's coming, but very slight. His digital cushion is much stronger but still weak. better in NS front than the OS. I need to get braver going bootless hack the whole way every time.

Hopefully you will see that his feet have massively improved in front as well as behind but we still have a way to go to get where I’d like to be with his fronts. His movement is a lot straighter in front. His front toes gets long very quick but I don’t get chipping or bits breaking off as the horn now is much better quality. I lightly rasp every couple of days the toe so it doesn’t get too out of control and the progress since doing this has helped with tenderness post trim. Since March he’s grown a complete hoof capsule and I see positive changes to growth angles each month getting tighter each time.

I hope that I've saved him from further injury long term as I saw the Check Ligament as a warning sign of incorrect balance and weakness.
I've learnt loads over the past year and become a little OCD about his feet and diet however have made some good fellow nerdy barefoot friends, who without having met through this journey I would have given up :D

A recent vet visit to a friend who also went barefoot with her warmblood horse, the vet turned round and said ‘oh warmbloods can’t go barefoot’… ‘oh’ I said ‘that’s funny cause mine is….’ ;o)

Hopefully this will be seen as being positive to others and maybe hope out there for those thinking and or starting their barefoot journey :)

Well done. :D It's a hard route to go down when you are surrounded by people who think you are doing the wrong thing. I don't understand quite how the horse world became so addicted to horseshoes... but that's a discussion for another thread.

Where are the photos? I really want to see them now after reading your description. ;)

Wow what a great improvement!! Especially the solar views, they are amazing! Gosh well done for being so brave and committed to your journey! It was really encouraging to read your post today as I have a realy doubting thomas day to day. 4 months into my barefoot journey and things have been going well. Feet have changed amazingly. Just like you, have people looking and laughing at the gimpy barefoot horse hobbling over stones etc and vet and farrier decrying what I am doing on a regular basis. Still I stumble on! Yesterday had my lovely trimmer out to do his feet for the 4th time. He doesnt really have much hoof taken off just a tidy up and balance and a little rasp etc, not chunks of hoof wall or anything. Today my horse was quite a lot more footy. I panicked, had a meltdown, assumed my horse is lame again from his collateral ligament strain (horses had a hoolie in the field this morning much to YO disgrace, mine were confined to barracks all day as punishment) I thought he might have aggrevagted something. He was sore in the back menage, definitely, this menage has lots of stones mixed in with the rubber, some big, its hard to avoid them and he seemed to feel them all! Very tender on the road to start but eased up after a few yards and walked nicely. Rode fine in the big nicer menage. So maybe he is a bit sore after his trim, i notice you said yours was sore sometimes? I find it so hard not to panic when something changes, it all feel so fragile! Thanks for your post it has given me some hope when I needed it most. I will add to your nerdy barefoot friend numbers as I too am a little obsessed with feet!!

Thankyou for your kind words. Taking the pics shows the changes that I think you just can't see everyday. And absolutely those days filled with guilt when he's gimped on stones and thinking why am I doing it. My boy has to be kept in trim to stop the toe going too long inbetween trims as he's sensitive to big changes. so the last trim session I have rasped the toes every few days to make it less of a change. but always trimmer makes the shape, I don't touch the heels. Whether he's LGL at times I dunno I'm too scared to find out for sure but manage him as if he is as much as I can.
We're now in the throws of nasty wet weather, feet maybe softer, possible thrush, changes in grass will have an impact. Maybe look at diet again and see if there is anything sugary to reduce.
You maybe finding he's getting used to feeling his feet again. The more you do the more that the feet will grow. The biggest improvements I've had is going over rougher stuff and then seeing that the digital cushion in his heels have built up.

Did you manage to get hold of Diane to come and sort your boy?

Welcome to my nerdy barefoot club! you've goto show us your pics though!

Big improvements in both the angle and the heels. And yes, you must have a rather expensive camera!
Very pleased with changes. Will feel happier once more concavity happens in front.
No flashy camera just my lil ole trusty HTC One camera phone... and Hoof OCD... I had to rein it in when I was taking pics once a week and do every month!!

Great progress, well done.

I'd just like to suggest to anyone who has, already got the diet perfect and still has sole sensitivity gets a Cushings test done the first symptom is often foot insensitivity.

Thank you frozen hoof boots! No I havent had diane out yet. I must get on to that, must admit I havent done anything about it been searching for a yard and havent found the right thing yet but my focus has been on that as things are a little odd at my yard atm!

Here are his pics. Appologies for those that have seen them before! Some new solar and caudal views.

Im glad its not just me that worries all the time. Its so hard when your vet tells you you shouldnt be doing anything with him at all! Hard to keep the faith on bad days. As you say diet is huge and the grass is doing wierd things so could be extra sugar. He only has fast fibre and supplements linseed and seaweed. I have recently changed over to soaked hay from haylage as he had the runs so this should help a bit although I only soak for about an hour.

Thanks for advice and happy to be in your gang! Will give diane a call very soon for both my boys!

Really inspiring to read, thank you so much for posting.

I decided to go barefoot with my horse in June as his feet were so poor. I feel like I have more bad days than good at the moment :(

My trimmer thinks it will take near on a year to get him back into proper work (IF his feet ever fully recover) but I'm going to stick with it.

Great photos and what a transformation. I really like these updates for although I don't as yet have my own horse I'm trying to learn as much as I can about barefoot as I really don't agree with shoeing. Thank you and well done for sticking to your plan.
