I'm bringing my pony home from his livery yard on the weekend. The plan was to bring him back in the lorry however I've been let down at the last minute & cant find anyone else who can help me as there is quite a big show on this weekend too, so I think I might just get up early on Sunday morning & walk him back. He hasn't done any road work for around 3 months, and its 2.5 miles from the yard to my house. Planning on walking on as many verges as I can although there's some stretches of road that don't have any, can anyone see a problem with this? I'm a little worried about his feet, but I'm hoping they'll be ok!

If his feet are in generally good condition then I would expect him to be fine, I would do a hack of a similar distance with one coming back into work or going barefoot for the first time and think nothing of it providing they had decent feet.

Thanks for your reply. His feet are pretty good, he's due a trim in the next couple of weeks but you wouldn't know that from looking at them x

In all honestly I'd consider that sort of mileage as nothing as long as the horse has no foot / lameness issues and would happily do a hack of that length bringing mine back into work. If due a trim then you should have excess wall to wear down anyway and you may find that your trimmer has a little less to do when they do come.

as long as he is sound and has good feet, I wouldn't have any concerns. my boy hasn't had back shoe on for at least eleven years - you would never know - they are trimmed religiously by an excellent farrier every six weeks and look amazing - he is 20 and a 17.2 selle francais.
