Very sorry to do yet another thread on barefoot but there are too many threads to read through! Basically I am debating for the ginger one to go barefoot but I don't know where to start (obviously removing the shoes! Lol) We have very little off road riding round our way and I am concerned about doing so much road work without shoes. He is currently being fed molasses free alfa-a, about 200g linseed a day, 365 complete supplement, speedibeet and ab lib hay. Any advice gratefully received! Thanks in advance :0)

Great you are thinking of going barefoot, what is your motivation behind this?

There really is so much info out there, websites, books, DVDs etc. it can't possibly all be discussed on a thread :)

A good place to start is rockley farms website, check out the blog in particular. Easy to understand snippets of info

Diet sounds ok to me for barefoot!
My two tbs are both barefoot and 10000% sound. Roadwork isn't a disaster for barefoot, I know some barefooters who swear by it.
Expect them to be a bit footy at first, one of mine looked broken leg lame every time he was on anything but grass, few weeks in even stoney surfaces are not a bother on him.
You will need to persevere a bit but most people I know who stick it out have had success. I think i can only think of one horse off the top of my head who genuinely wouldn't stay sound without shoes

Thanks guys. I'm based in south Devon . The main motivation is boy - I'm trying to work out whether he'd be better without shoes i.e. the concussion from trotting on roads etc. There seems to be a lot of advocates for barefoot and it has been something I've been debating for a little while.

Phoenixhorse.myfastforum.org is a barefoot forum. Plenty of help there if you don't get the answers you need here.

If you buy Feet First, ignore the seaweed, it's too high in iron and iodine and now outdated. The cover photo is fantastic though - it's me and George :D

We are in Cornwall our two cobs are barefoot and all our riding is roadwork! We hack out as much as we can so they self trim. The more road work the better!
