Mare has always been barefoot behind but got a really nasty abscess in her near hind a week after Christmas. Vet came twice then farrier (shod in front at that time) and then barefoot trimmer.

However over the last two weeks she's become footy on her hind again and the outer wall seems to be "coming away". I sent a photo to the trimmer who thought it wasn't too much to worry about.

However yesterday, there's a hole that has appeared and is really soft on the outer half of the hoof - I can dig at it and it crumbles away with a hoof pick. I did this slightly where you can see it is whiter.

Any advice??

It looks as if it is where the abscess was and it has now grown down, I would use peroxide to clean it and that will also help it harden up. It will probably continue to crumble away until only the healthy wall and sole is left behind, I would not panic just keep it clean and it should soon grow out.

I think she has had an abscess which has underrun the back quarter of the foot. Can you see the crack by the frog, matching up with the dark mark near the hoof wall?

If so, you can expect the whole sole to peel and expose a new one underneath, possibly with black gunk in between.
