Apologies if this has been asked before but I have just been looking on the website of a local farrier (not mine) and he states on there that as trimmers arent qualified using one may void your horse insurance. Has anyone heard of this?

Yes, I have come across this before. Always best to check your policy documents. I don't usually come down on the site of insurance companies as, in my opinion, they are far too quick to look for a get-out clause, but as basically anyone can buy a knife and a white coat and call themselves a barefoot trimmer, I can understand their wanting to clarify what consititues professional hoofcase.

Interesting point. I had to submit a complete list of dates and procedures carried out by my ex farrier to my insurance company (from farrier on his headed paper). I presume that they were checking that I had not economised on farrier visits (I hadn't).

Never used a barefoot trimmer so have no idea if they can be officially recognised and insured or not.

Check your policy, I think the NFU specifies a qualified registered farrier. There might be some insurance companies that give the option of a trimmer though. Perhaps those who use trimmers would know.

I've never been asked for that before! When I claimed for remedial farriery I had to submit receipts from the farrier detailing what he had done (that was extra to what he would normally do), but I don't have a list of when my farrier comes out.

I was in a bit of a panic about that too, I did have a list of dates but didn't expect the farrier to have one as well. Luckily they accepted a computer print out from him. I insure through SEIB.

I insure through SEIB. I do my own horses - I'm neither a farrier or a recognised "trimmer". Never had a problem.

Brucea, have you ever been asked to provide details of how/ who by your horse's feet are trimmed? Just curious really. I was on my recent claim, where the vet mentioned foot balance problems on the report, but never prior to that.

Perhaps if the vet hadn't mentioned foot balance I would not have had to supply the farriery history.
