Barefooters, travelling- to boot or not to boot?

Travelling 125 miles in two weeks time. I hate travelling boots seen too many slip. So Samba who is shod in front will have brushing boots and overreach on.


Toffee is barefoot, do I even bother booting her or just put some brushing boots on her as well just incase?

Both are good travellers but havent done this distance for a long time.

If it's a trailer, I would suggest using over reach boots on the hooves closest to the other horse. I've put my horses Old Macs on when trailering just so I can tack up and go when I get to the end of the journey!

Probably not much help but I moved my mare 120 miles at the beginning of Jan, no shoes or boots and she was fine, also hadn't travelled for 6 years. (she never wears boots for anything so didn't see much point in adding something else that was weird to her for the situation)

Well I'm no expert on this, but I think the professional transporters don't like them to have anything on? And they are the experts on this sort of thing I guess.

The nearest I've come to this was a round trip of 150 miles, I just had the one on board, and he was travelled in his mark todd travel boots. He's shod all round. It all went without incident.

I would have thought the unshod one would be fine "bare"?

What about putting down some shavings/straw on the floor, to give them a better grippy surface and it will also soak up any urine?

I would just buy some decent travel boots that don't slip and fit properly! they are designed for the job afterall unlike, brushing boots etc... which are not!

If your travelling two together i'd definitely wear them, have seen a nasty experiance when one horse slipped and took a chunk out of the horses horses leg (not my horses thankfully as they wear boots), but just a thought.
