Are you in the states Classicalfan? In the UK, I am pretty sure we don't put animal products in feeds for vegetarian animals. We had an outcry over animal by products in chicken feed here, many years ago now and I think the practice was outlawed.
The ash content given in horse feeds is definately what is left of the product once it has been burnt, as others have already said in more detail.
Rockysmum, yes, I think that's pretty much it in a nut shell! I wouldn't like to say how much of the 68% is absorbed though, interesting point!
