Lots of good ideas here but I just wanted to add that I have a 5 year old pure ID who came with bad manners - bargy, in your face, pushing into you, towing you when being led, not standing still and generally a pain. He is also into ramming his door!! I have had to be quite tough on him to instill manners and it is a work in progress (he is a sharp and intelligent horse and a lovely ride) 
I know you say you have to stable at night but could you extend the time he is out at all? I have my boys out at night and in during the day - this makes him far more chilled out. Maybe even an extra hour for a few weeks?
