Bargy 4yo HELP!!

My 4 1/2yo cob x dartmoor mare, Has become a bolshy, bargy, rude cow bag! She's recently been clipped and yesterday had front shoes on, (another major drama) She's out 9 hours a day and is good to catch etc. She's in a loddon stable with a sliding door. The second her door opens even slightly she forces her way out!! Last night she got a smack for doing it. But I don't want to make her head shy, suggestions please?

Hav found carryin a whip nd smacking their chest while grumblin shld work, my lot are nt ins tbles tho so not sure if it would work :/
 
You should never hit a horse round the head area in my opinion. EVER.

You do need to get this under control though before she becomes dangerous and hurts you ... but then you know that :)

I would carry a whip and really tell her off verbally when she does it. I would then turn her straight back round to do it again ... and again ... and again until she got the message. You must stay consistent so no short cuts. When she gets it right praise her and continue on your way. Good luck :D
 
She didn't get hit in the face, just waved it in her face, she got belted across the chest, I have ordered a stall guard and aquired myself a schooling stick. Growling/raised voices she ignores. Will let know how we got. Thanks.
 
A short sharp smack can work wonders, however it needs to be well timed and not around the face.

I would work on her ground manors, take her in the school and work on leading and backing up. She should be able to yeild to pressure now by now.

When entering her stable put on a headcollar over the door, so if she does barge out you still have hold of her. Ask her to back away from the door before entering. Strong and firm voice commands; if you need to, place your hand on her shoulder and push her back. If she doesn't respond then I would give a small smack on the shoulder. Once she has backed up, praise her and enter the stable. Once in with her work on backing up some more and then lead out. Make sure she doesn't drag you out the stable though. You can give a shrap tug on the leadrope if she does. Don't just pull as that will give her something to pull against.

I'd add vocal commands too. A vocal 'back up' before entering would be useful.
 
ditto all of the above. when mine was going thro a bargy stage i demanded a couple of steps back befoe he was allowed out of his box. Now even though he bangs & demands to come out he respects my space & wont move forwards until I allow him to.

Like minds and all that... I've done this... And it works... Not even a hard smack... A tap normally has more than enough shock tactic :rolleyes:

I've been waving at Ben for years... He doesn't give a damn:(... I get the 'growling doesn't work, I've been there growling and jumping up and down in the past to absolutely no effect (infuriatingly so:rolleyes::mad:) what I have found is that very soon after, I started using the growly 'back' followed swiftly by the tap of a schooling whip... Suddenly (surprisingly:rolleyes:) he started to listen to and respect my voice and respond to it before I needed to back it up with a tap... They're not stupid;)
