I have a 3yr MW cob, she stands at 14.3hh. I have had her since she was 10 months old and she is my first baby. I have 2 other horses (a TB my main riding horse). The cob has just started to be lightly backed around 10 weeks ago, she long reins well and has basically taken everything in her stride, she is laid back and normally very quiet, no problems atall.
Now recently i have moved her and her pal to a smaller field where they are both strip grazed on approx 1.5 acres and growing every other day. They where on a 12 acre field and this is when our problems first started. At first my cob didnt like her fly mask with nose shield - she has to wear it the summer as she is very partial to sunburn. She would let me put it on but was a little weary of it, no problem some quiet words and careful handling we got it on. Next came the headcollar part normally no problem to catch or with the headcollar- one look at it and whoosh shes off down the other end of the field, turns her bum and runs off! so managed to get a head collar on her and left it on for a few days as i knew she would be moving to the smaller patch down the road. Moving day comes - A friend and i lead them down the field all is well cob leading nicely - until we enter the field and lead them down to their sectioned off bit - cob gets very excited and just pulls away from me leaving me on the other end of the line - i have a 12ft rope luckily) i managed to hang on to her and basically she was just going round me in circles trotting really fast, got to the pen and managed to get her head collar off and off she went. So a standard headcollar = no control
unsurprisingly. (since invested in a control halter waiting for it to arrive)
Now this was 2 weeks ago, since then i havent attempted to take her out the field or do anything with her other than check her over, poo pick and give her a brush whilst she grazes, no real reason other than taking it slow as she is only 3. Went to put on her mask tonight and off she went round the field - so i persevered and managed to coax her headcollar on, put her on the 12ft line again just incase, she saw the mask and went off circling around me, bucking at me - so i took the opportunity and did join up which worked a treat, soon she was following me around the field unclipped like a dog. So i left it at that.
The join up worked well. Lately she has become very pushy, bargy and down right rude with her mannors, i know shes testing me out. I dont want to start any more work with her until we have established who is boss
I quite like the whole Monty Roberts thing from what i have seen but do not want to go down the whole parelli root. I just want to establish ground rules.
I have an experienced person who has been helping me with the backing process but she is very busy and not always around, so i am looking for someone who works with horses the way monty roberts does as i think it really can work! i know you can buy the dually halters with the DVD but i want to be shown in person and its something i am interested in.
Can anyone recommend somebody around the west mids area please or if anyone has any useful tips for bargy babys that dont want to be caught these will be welcomed too!
