anyone know how too stop dogs barking?!

right well i have a jack russel(nearly1) and a scotty(nearly 3)...the scotty barks at the slightest sound therefore the jack russel pup has started too copy this is really annoying as they both sleep in cages at night but as we go upstairs too bed they will hear the floorboards creek or something and wont stop barking for about an hour, we've had complaints from the neighbours and the barking is getting way out of hand, when i have people round they bark violently however they would never hurt a fly they are all mouth and no action if visitors stroke them they shut up but as soon as they let go there off again the violent barking is obv scary for non doggy visitors and although the barking has calmed down considerably threw them growing up it is still a nightmare, we have tried punishment and we have tried giving treats if they stay quiet but it doesnt seem too work

any suggestions?

First you need to teach your dogs quiet, interrupt them when they are barking at something trivial, get their attention, make them sit and say quiet, then treat. If you have a clicker this will help mark the behaviour you want.

When you have visitors the dogs get excited and start barking,just remove them from the room if they are too fired up to respond to the quiet command. Let them back into the room after a couple of minutes and keep repeating if necessary.

This could take as long as it takes depending on how entrenched the behaviour has been happening. I would also look at how much exercise your dogs are getting and what you feed as some food is full or colouring and can make dogs more hyper.

thanks, will give that a try and they both go on at least 3, 30 min walks a day and then twice a week go too the stables with me where they will be running around for about an hour with exitement and then they just seem too stroll around as they are usually there for upto 4 hours however they get home have a 10 min rest and they have all there anergy back again :L
