C is starting to drop weight due to the lack of grazing now out our yard and someone suggested barley rings.

Has anyone used these and do they do the job of keeping weight on?

Currently im feeding her on pasture mix, Sugarbeet and Alfa A Oil twice a day but this doesnt seem to be helping much.

Haven't used barley rings but use micronised barley on my veteran mare, alongside Alfa Beet and veg oil. It definitely seems to be the best way to keep weight on my mare and is very cost-effective.

However, all horses are different and some don't get on too well with barley - some horses get skin lumps on it and some owners report it makes their horses 'fizzy'.

I've used them for Spring, to get weight on her as she was so poor. In fact, all of mine being fed have some in their night feeds. I've only been able to get the D & H Barley Rings but Burgess & Sneyd made the original Super Barley which came in ring form.
It's helped Spring enormously, she has a great shine to her coat (has added linseed) and she's been putting the weight on well; she's gone from this - (dates are on the pic's)

I haven't any decent pic's of now, but she looks a hell of a lot better again!
I soak two scoops in warm water and mix with the rest of the feed (economy mix, stud cubes); this amount feeds four but she gets by far, the biggest share and two bags (a dustbinful) last me just over 3 weeks I think. The only supplement I use is brewers yeast.
They've certainly worked for Spring but she is a yearling and growing, I can't say that they've made any of the others sillier in their behaviour but I know that some horses react to barley. I think they'd certainly be worth a try.

I feed the D & H barley rings to my elderly gelding who was dropping weight fast earlier this year. He is now looking fantastic, they have done the trick - and he loves them

I feed micronised flaked barley as I dont need the rings as I feed an all round supplement.

This combined with speedi beet, alfa oil, soya oil and pink powder seems to be working really well for Baron.

i feed barley rings with show shine, alpha a, black sunflower seeds & speedi beet to a poor doer & he looks fab.
