Well, I got to the farm today to find a huddle of people around one of the barns, which had collapsed under the weight of the snow! Luckily all but 1 got away with only a few cuts and bruises, but Fig (a really sweet mare) has cut her leg by her knee joint, so vets are worried that her joint may become infected or that she's burst the joint capsule.

It happened sometime last night, so the farmer rang the YMs at 7:30 who rushed down to find the roof caved in, and a barn of very scared horses. They managed to move enough rubble out the way to get the horses out into a field (with lots of haylage for them to munch on), after the vet checked them over and they had an extra rug put on.

Now though, I'm really scared that the barn Wings is in might also collapse! They are fairly old buildings, but considered structurally sound. Wings can't really live out as last year it snowed, he must have eaten the snow as would come in with colic like symptoms. Maybe I'm just being paranoid, but I'm dreading a phone call to tell me the barn had collapsed onto Wings! Luckily the other 2 (natives) are out in the field away from any harm.

Apparently though, a lot of barns up here (North East England) have collapsed, and a whole herd of sheep were killed recently when a barn collapsed.

Sorry for my random post, just don't think I'll get too much sleep tonight :(

I <3 My Teddi - Yeah, I'm sure he will be, tbh the way the barn was, I'm surprised no horses were more seriously injured!

La Fiaba - I know! We're not sure when it collapsed either, as no one lives in at the farm, so they could have been standing there for hours! Think Fig should be ok, it's been bandaged and cleaned, and the vets are looking at draining it or operating, so at least it was caught on time.

If you can could you not get a ladder and start knocking the snow off with a brush or shovel that is what we are doing to a hay shed that has a suspect roof it is easier than it sounds if you do it in sections and keep moving the ladder.

If the barn is old i would consider this as the snow is an amazing weight more than you would think once you have moved most of it off throw rock salt across it and it helps stop it settling.

Even if you can only get some off it helps with the thawing out.

So has one of ours, we have a farm and have had an awfull lot of snow. My horses are stuck in as the snow in the field is up to my 15hh arabs elbows and the yard is a skating rink.
The roof was still up when the cattle were fed yesterday morning, but when we walked round to check water pipes at lunch time the roof had collapsed. Luckily all the cows are ok but it could have been a lot worse particularly as the pen next door has the in calf cows in that are due any day. We now have a jcb propping the rest of the roof up to stop it collapsing any more as all the cows are in now and we have no where else to put them.
