My YO/Boss came running out this morning to say that the Dutch Barn roof at the other farm had collapsed and that her horses were in there.

We got there and found carnage.

The entire barn roof was down on one corner where a livery keeps her pony and he was under the roof.

Her OH's horses were all fine as they were at the back of the barn which has a brick built bit to it.

Our amazing vet got there just before we did and had sedated him to stop him from getting up. The sheep penning that makes him his stable in there was holding the roof up enough for him to lie underneath just.

The fire brigade were there and cut some metal work up for us to get underneath to him.

After some digging and rearranging the vet and YO's OH wrapped some ropes around his legs and kept his head down and pulled him out once he was out far enough to check over the he got up!!

The pony is so lucky to be alive as he was trapped exactly where the roof had collapsed on to. He has had to have a cut to the head stiched and has a small cut to the eyelid so hopefully if any infection is kept under control he should make a full recovery.

YO's OH's horses were all fine if a little confused as to why they hadnt had their breakfast but were unharmed. We managed to get them out round a gate at the back of the barn and took them back past the front of it and they were really confused with the roof lying all on the floor.

The fire brigade were very helpful with the cutting tools but other than that did nothing.

Top marks to the vet and my bosses OH.

We think it was the weight of the melting snow on top that caused it to collapse. Coincidentally on my way to the yard this morning i noticed another barn of the same construction collapsed too however that had no livestock in it just old tractors.

Yikes! Glad the lad is okay.

I think we're goign to have to reconsider how buildings are designed and built these days - if winters are going to keep being this rough, we need to be prepared for it.

there was some one on here who posted a similar thread a day or two ago, their barn roof had also collapsed, the snow is causing lots of problems.
glad everyone is ok!

Indeed!!

This barn has been there as long as i remember and always seemed to be a good sturdy structure but its true that we need to re-evaluate how things are constructed.

What was said after everything had calmed down and no one was hurt was that maybe it was a blessing as they can now rebuild.

It was awful when we got there i really thought the pony was a goner.

Luckily he was a pony and it wasnt one of my bosses OH's 17hh team chasing TBS as they just wouldnt have a chance in less than 3ft head height. Ponies sure are made of sterner (sp?) stuff!!

I do worry about that with ours, although they are small timber stables, not a barn - although not sure of any difference.

Will be taking the snow off the top tomorrow with a brush, although horses will need to be well away, snow falling off the roof makes them very silly

Glad the pony was ok, obviously a sensible soul who knew someone would be in to help him :)

I went and got some pics of the barn today.

In the closer one you can just see the gap that we pulled the pony out of.

The pony seems ok too he has been out in the field for a bit and although he is sore and stiff seems ok for the ordeal that he has been though.

I'm glad they're all ok - how scary!

I remember watching the BBC documentaries on Yosemite National Park last year, and there was a guy whose job it was in winter to go around cutting the compacted snow on building roofs into blocks and knocking it off, to stop this kind of thing happening. Maybe we need to start incorporating roof clearing into our own winter routines when the snow comes!
