I was in Tescos today in the car stuff isle and they had a little packet of the grip stuff that looked exactly what is under the Barnsby grip numnahs!

I want a side saddle grip numnah as my side saddle, altough it's been altered to fit Hattie by a Master Saddler, still slides forward about 2 inches when I ride just like my astride saddle does. They don't sell side saddle grip numnahs so when I saw this stuff at Tescos, though I'd just sew some at the bottom of my normal side saddle numnah. The pack of grip netting at Tescos was only a little square for the dashboard but I found this stuff on Ebay:
Grip matting
It looks like what I saw at Tescos but in white.

Has anyone used this stuff and is it indeed the same stuff that is on the Barnsby numnahs?

I found this one as well and this looks identical to what is on my Barnsby grip pad!!: Anti slip matting

Has anyone used this one?

LOL, I have NOTHING to do with either auction, I'm not the seller- I just want a non slip side saddle numnah, that's all!

Who fitted your saddle? You're not too far from me and I used a master saddler I'm very unhappy with!

I don't know anything about side saddles but surely 2inches movement can't be a good thing?

I don't know if you can get them now, but you used to be able to get pimple numnahs. I've used them and they are quite good. Haven't seen any for ages though.

If your saddle is slipping very badly, I'd get the saddler back.

lady_bird, I will pm you with the saddler's name. It was a specialist side saddler and did an excellent job on my saddle but It's Hattie's conformation that is the problem.
I've had to order a special curved girth for my astride saddle to stop if from going forward so I may try it on my side saddle to see if it works for that too.

f_s_ , I've not seen a pimple numnah, something else to look for on ebay!
The saddle doesn't slip as badly as other's I have ridden one. I rode in one side saddle in May and that went straight onto Hatties shoulders and withers! With my awkward ned, it seems to be that when a saddle is a good fit, then it ill only slide forward about 2" and stay there.

Hi

I bought a square of what looks like the white 'Grip Matting' on the first eBay site - mine was advertised as being for under saddles, but I'm sure it's the same stuff

I bought it for my Welsh Cob's saddle which slips from side to side because she's a barrel !

The mesh has helped enormously.

It needs a good scrub after every other use to keep it slightly tacky.

I've also just bought a roll of the black stuff on the 2nd eBay auction you mention.

That was £1 for a roll (at a stall at a County Show). I've cut one numnah shape out of it, but yet to try it. I think it will do the same job though.

Yes, it is exactly the same stuff and can be used in exactly the same way.

In fact, evil me, I've done it myself.

The trick though it getting it to lie flat and getting a large enough piece not to have an edge under the saddle. To be honest, I'm not sure I'd sew it to a pad unless I was very certain I could do so without creating a ridge or wrinkle. There are pads available with inserts of it (called Kling-on pads

) available in North America and the non-slip bits are sort of set in to the padding to make for a smooth line. But it should stay in place without, just be very careful when you put your regular pad on top not to wrinkle or shift the non-slip sheet.

Isnt that grip stuff really uncomfortable for the horse though? Imagine putting it on your arm and pushing it towards your hand or to the side. OW! It would seriously pull on the hair. Dont like that idea!

I won a Barnsby Grip Pad a few years ago and it is brilliant. I did look at that Tesco stuff recently, it is not the same, but may well work.
