Basic Horse First Aid Kit must haves ?

Quirky would like this its another New yard post she reckons I'll do 30 before I move.

OK so I currently dont need my own first aid kit where I am but will on the new yard so what would you say were must haves?

Animalintex
Wound pads
Gamgee
Bandages
Salt
Sharp scissors
A clean container for washing area

Dont worry I dont want to be a DIY vet just want the sort of day to day stuff. I have looked at First Aid Kits but they seem like the human ones full of stuff you dont want.

Agree 100% that the first aid kits you can buy tend to be full of rubbish! As basics, I would also have plenty of vetwrap, some duct tape (great for poulticing), hibiscrub and/or povidone, cotton wool... erm - that's what I use the most, anyway. Oh, and a thermometer.

Adding to that i've also got:

Wound powder
Vetalintex
Cotton wool pads and buds
Several rolls of co-flex
Ice packs (the sort you hit and they instantly freeze)
Thermometer
Sudocreme
Roll of bandesive
Hibiscrub

Think thats about it?? I tend to collect things as i go along.

Just thinking what I have in mine, umm,

*twitch, hoofpick, torch, scissors and thermometer
*syringes
*electric tape, duct tape
*vetwrap, quilt wraps and nappy liners, for wrapping wounds
*nappies for poulticing and oozy wounds
*cream for scratches
*betadine for washing cuts etc
*10 litre can of saline water for washing. clean ice cream tubs.
*cotton wool...that's it for emergencies, no frills but it does the job.

My Medicine cabinet is stuffed full, but the above is in a crate and easy to grab in the first instance.

I also always have sedative, banamine, anti-biotics and bute on hand.

I buy my own needles, syringes, depocillin, dusting powder, colostrum, foaling and ringing gear etc from the Farm Store because it is cheaper than from the Vet, even he says that!

My first aid kit includes but is not limited to:

* Nappies (great for poulticing!)
* Gaffer/duck tape
* Hoof pick
* Cotton wool
* Saline washes
* Rugs
* Torch
* Scissors (long and curved types)
* Tweezers (blunted and needle nosed)
* A scalpel blade
* A disposable razor (for trimming hair from cuts)
* Stipic powder
* Rope (of various lengths and strengths)
* Twitch
* Lint
* Antiseptic Wipes
* Antiseptic
* Syringes
* Thermometer
* ACP (and Velerian for my stallions)
* Bandages (self adhesive, elasticated, ect.)
* Pain meds (bute or asprin)
* Cream E45
* Sudocrem
* Antihistamines (topical and administered)
* Vaseline
* Surgical Tape
* Head collar/lead rope.
* Emergency numbers for vet etc..

I know I have left loads out of what is in my emergency kit, but I hope this helps.

Also have a box/cupboard that is separate from everything else so if there is an emergency you can just grab your emergency box and not be running about trying to find stuff - mine is all in a RED box - so I can find it easy!

Most importantly no matter what the emergency is always know your vet/farriers number and have a way to phone them either by mobile or if your on livery and have a good yard owner from their phone.
