Basil and his eating!

I’ve posted before about Basil, my daughters little dog and his refusal to eat anything much.
We had finally settled on butchers tinned which I can mix a bit of dried in with and I’d say he eats 75% of the time.
Tonight I realised I’d forgotten to go and buy him more tinned food.
I gave him a bit of puppy food with a squirt of Cecil’s salmon oil he has for his claws, not for a second expecting him to eat it and he’s cleaned the bowl.
I’ve tried so so many different brands of food and he has never eaten dried before.
Is puppy food a definite no for an older (only 2.5yr) dog?
Maybe it was a one off but I’m quietly positive at finding something he apparently really liked.
I’m assuming it’s higher calorie for growth but he’s not a dog who needs his weight watched.

I feed a bit of puppy food to my 13 year old lurcher. He likes it, the fat % is okay for him and it’s one of the rare foods without the wretched pea protein in it. If he likes it and his tum agrees, I’d go with it!

Ah ok that’s interesting. This is my daughters Basil. Cecil has the world biggest appetite for a small dog! I think he’d eat anything I put in his bowl to be honest!
I do buy him his own nice food but Basil won’t touch it.

As the owner of the fussiest dog on the planet I'd say feed him whatever he deigns to eat. Dogs of old survived on absolute shite.

I hope so, I’ll have a read on the bags and see what the difference actually is but I’ve never known him mop up like that!

I think most puppy foods have a high oil content, to make the most of the calories. If he likes it, I would feed it to him and just monitor his weight.

I don’t think he will ever be a fat dog. I’ve always wanted to get more calories into the tiny amount he will eat so it could in fact be a good thing.
